4/28/21 : Today in Minor League Camp

At the conclusion of each minor league spring training camp the Phillies select two players to receive the Bill Giles and Larry Rojas Awards. These awards were established in 1999 to honor minor league players who share the same attributes as the awards namesakes : a love and respect for the game of baseball. They are given respectively to the American born and foreign born player who has been chosen by the coaches and staff as having the most outstanding camp. The awards were announced to the players earlier today at the Complex and this afternoon to the public.

This years winners are 21 year old catcher Logan O’Hoppe ( Giles Award ) and 20 year old outfielder Johan Rojas ( Rojas Award ). Both players were participants in major league camp in February/March and carried over their efforts into minor league camp once it began in April. They are both highly regarded prospects in the organization.

Congrats to both Logan and Johan for being awarded these prestigious honors !

Today’s Action :

The fellas played intra squad scrimmages this afternoon beginning at 2 PM. The AA group squared off against the High A group in the stadium while the Low A group played the Rookie group on Roberts Field.

We watched the contest in the stadium ...

The AA group prevailed 4-3 in a nine inning game.

On the Hill :

LHP Josh Hendrickson had a strong outing for the High A group ... he pitched three innings allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six batters. The 23 year old Australian has had a very good camp.

RHP Austin Ross, LHP Jeff Singer and RHP Mark Potter each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the AA squad.

At the Plate :

Keaton Greenwalt tripled for the AA squad and CJ Chatham had three hits including a double. Bryson Stott also doubled and had two knocks. Colby Fitch hit a screamer off the right field wall that was so well tagged it bounced back to the right fielder and he held Colby to a single, Fitch got an RBI on the drive as Stott scored.

Herbert Iser hit a long home run to right field for the High A team in the ninth inning. Jhailyn Ortiz had three hits and a HBP in four plate appearances and Abrahan Gutierrez doubled.

Defensive Gem :

Madison Stokes made a diving catch playing right field for the AA squad to end the second inning on a well struck ball. Madison has played both corner infield spots and the outfield during camp.

Swipes :

Rudy Rott and Corbin Williams each stole another base today for the High A group ... they must have a competition going on 🧐🤓.

Another Intra Squad day tomorrow with camp set to break on Friday.
