Corey Oswalt has been acquired from the San Francisco Giants for cash considerations, he’s 28 years old and is 6’5” 250 pounds. Oswalt was the Mets 7th round draft selection in the 2012 draft from James Madison High School in San Diego, CA.
He has pitched in 26 major league games with the Mets including 14 starts - 17 of those appearances came in 2018. His fastball generally sits in the 91-92 mph range but has flashed as high as 95 mph. He also throws a changeup and slider.
In the minor leagues he’s been primarily a starter - 130 appearances with 115 as starts. His ERA over 622 IP is a respectable 3.57 and his WHIP is 1.27. Corey missed a good bit of the 2021 season with a knee injury. He declared free agency in October and signed with the Giants on March 14th.
Given the lack of starting pitching depth at the upper levels of the minors it would seem that Oswalt will be added to the Lehigh Valley rotation. He last appeared in a game for AAA Sacramento in the Giants system on May 5th.
From a fan’s view welcome to the Phillies organization Corey !
In other moves today C Herbert Iser has been transferred to AAA level Lehigh Valley to provide catching help as Donny Sands has been placed on the 7 day IL. OF Hunter Markwardt has also been moved to LHV from Reading. RHP Ofrediy Gomez has been assigned to Reading from extended spring training.
