Saturday mornings are the wrap up of skills competitions. Today a hitting competition emphasizing bat to ball skills.  I don’t really know the rules of the events as explained to the players by the coaches when I watch them but I still get a kick out of how spirited and lively the players and coaches are during each drill.  They banter back and forth and cheer each of their team members to complete the task at hand.  It’s obvious to me that it builds team camaraderie and keeps things loose.  These are players that while they participate in extended spring training games it’s more of a training camp atmosphere than being assigned to an affiliate roster where there are six games each week to focus on.  The coaches do a great job of keeping the fellas engaged in their work, it’s fun to sit on the sidelines and watch as well.  Good stuff - btw Lou Helmig won today’s hitting event for his team with a “walk-off” home run to right field.
