Seth Beer has signed a minor league contract with the Phillies. He had been playing in the Atlantic League for the Long Island Ducks where in 14 games he posted a .426 OBP with 3 doubles, 4 home runs and 14 RBIs. Beer is 28 years old and was the first round draft selection of the Houston Astros in the 2018 draft from Clemson. He played briefly in the major leagues ( 43 games) with the 2021 and 2022 Arizona Diamondbacks and has two major league home runs in 120 AB’s with a .208 average.
Last season Beer was in the Pirates organization spending time at both the AA and AAA levels - he had 12 home runs and 54 RBIs with a .277/.354/.431 slash line in 404 plate appearances. Defensively he’s played first base and both corner outfield spots with the majority of his time as a first baseman. Beer has been assigned to the Reading roster to provide a veteran presence and hopefully add offensive production to a squad that’s struggled to date.
At Clemson University he became one of the most successful baseball players in school history. He was the first freshman ever to be awarded the Dick Howser Trophy, which is given to the best college baseball player in the country, after hitting .369 with 18 home runs and 70 RBI in 2016. He was also the Louisville Slugger Freshman Player of the Year.
He has been in three professional organizations (Astros, Dbacks and Pirates) - chose free agency this past November, when no offers came he went to the Atlantic League. Hopefully he sparks the Reading lineup with what’s been described as a “sweet left handed swing.
From a fan’s view welcome to the Phillies organization Seth!
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
