A one day lag report as I was at the Phillies game in Dunedin and didn’t watch or listen to last night’s minor league games. I did spend some time this morning at Carpenter Complex watching the extended spring training crew play a scrimmage on Ashburn Field against their Detroit Tigers counterparts.
We saw two of our young players go yard. C/1B Freddy Francisco ( 20 years old ) took one over the left field fence and OF Yhoswar Garcia ( 19 years old ) showed some very impressive power by launching one over the batting eye in center field ... that’s a poke 😳.
A couple hurlers we noticed in action while we were there ... 21 year old LHP Erubiel Armenta from Mexico who threw a perfect inning with two strikeouts. He was signed by the Phillies in July of 2019 and pitched for Los Mochis in the Mexican Winter league in 2020 appearing in 13 games. He’s yet to appear in an affiliated league game. Today it looked like he had a decent array of breaking pitches working but we’ve heard also that he’s shown mid 90’s capability with the heater.
We also saw RHP Camilo Brazoban ( 22 years old ) throw for the first time. He pitched briefly in the Dominican Summer League in 2019 after signing in November of 2018 from the Dominican Republic. From our vantage point beyond the right field fence he looked to have some zip on the heater but also was struggling with command.
We were glad to see LHP Jaylen Smith ( 21 years old ) back on the mound. We’ve watched him on the backfields for a couple years now since he was drafted in the 29th round out of Copperas Cove, Texas in the 2018 draft. Anxious to see his progress as the summer season proceeds.
Here are some takeaways from last night’s Phillies minor league action.
Triple A East League - Scranton Wilkes Barre 6 (8-2 ) Lehigh Valley 4 (6-4 )
LHP Christopher Sanchez started and went 2 2/3 innings yielding five runs on three hits and four walks, he struck out six batters. Christopher has big arm potential but as we’ve seen on the backfields this spring he sometimes battles with the command ... sounds like that was the case last evening.
LHP Jeff Singer had a scoreless outing striking out the side in the seventh inning.
CF Ronald Torreyes and 1B Darrick Hall each hit doubles, Hall also walked twice in the game.
RHP Adonis Medina starts today for Lehigh Valley in a 4:05 game time. He last pitched on 5/9 - 5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K’s. In two starts this season Adonis has posted a 4.50 ERA in 8 IP with 8 K’s and 2 walks. His WHIP is 1.50. He threw 62 pitches his first outing and 71 in his second start.
Double A NorthEast League - Bowie 11 ( 7-2 ) Reading 5 ( 2-8 )
CF Matt Vierling had two knocks including his third home run of the season. He’s now hitting .361 in the early going. 1B Tatum McCarthy also homered and C Nick Matera hit his second home run of the year.
LHP Jakob Hernandez threw two scoreless innings in relief allowing just one walk while striking out four batters.
LH Ethan Lindow ( 22 years old ) will start today’s 6:35 PM game ... he last pitched on 5/9 - 3 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 5 K’s. In two appearances this season Ethan has posted a 2.70 ERA in 6 2/3 IP with 9 K’s and 4 walks. His WHIP is 1.20. He threw 61 pitches his first outing and 63 in his second appearance.
High A East League - Wilmington 9 ( 5-5 ) Jersey Shore 8 ( 3-7 ) - 10 innings
CF Hunter Markwardt had a day ... he went 3 for 5 with a triple and four RBIs 💪. SS Bryson Stott had two hits and a walk and scored three runs. C Logan O’Hoppe had a double and three RBIs. 1B Rudy Rott also doubled. Every batter in the lineup had at least one hit.
RHP Blake Brown struck out two batters in a scoreless inning. RHP Victor Santos had five punch outs in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
RHP Ben Brown ( 21 years old ) we believe gets the start in today’s 6:05 contest. he last pitched on 5/9 - 2 2/3 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K’s. In two appearances this season Ben has 6 2/3 IP with 11 K’s and 3 walks. His WHIP is 1.20. He threw 57 pitches his first outing and 58 in his second appearance.
Low A SouthEast League - Clearwater 6 ( 5-5 ) Fort Myers 3 ( 5-5 )
C Abrahan Gutierrez had two hits including a double, he’s hitting .400 in the early going. 1B DJ Stewart, DH Baron Radcliff and RF Carlos De La Cruz each drew two walks with Stewart and De La Cruz also having base knocks.
LHP Jordi Martinez went three innings ( 54 pitches ) allowing one run on one hit, no walks and striking out five batters. He hit 97 mph on the radar gun and focused on throwing two pitches, a FB ( 94-97 ) and a changeup ( 88-90 ), exciting young arm to keep an eye on ... I’m telling ya 🤓. LHP Tyler Adams struck out four batters in 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB.
RH Cristian Hernandez ( 20 years old ) will start tonight’s 7:00 PM contest ... he last pitched on 5/9 - 2 2/3 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 7 K’s. In two appearances this season Cristian has a total of 5 IP with 10 K’s and 1 walk. His WHIP is 1.60. He threw 50 pitches his first outing and 45 in his second appearance.
