Player Development Center Training - Carpenter Complex

Eleven pitchers threw side bullpen sessions, pitchers who threw today - Mitch Nuenborn, Braeden Fausnaught, Konnor Ash, Christian McGowan, Jose Peña Jr, Oswald Medina, Elicier Bata, Micah Ottenbreit, Chase Webster, Eiberson Castellano and Zach Haake.   Jon Duplantier threw a live BP session.

Yesterday select players played a five inning simulated game.  It’s called a simulated game because often times runners are placed on different bases to start the innings to simulate situations.  Of the eight pitchers who threw in the contest left hander Mason Ronan and right hander Ty Collins stood out.  Mason is being used in multiple innings, he went two yesterday and three the outing before, would seem a likely candidate to return to an affiliate when either a starter or bulk reliever is needed.  He’s throwing with more pop than what we saw in the spring, is also consistently throwing strikes and has seemed to tighten up his mechanics, throws a splitter which I used to be able to see out of the hand before, can’t differentiate it now that way.  Collins also seems to have more life on his pitches as well as more confidence, two appearances in a row where he’s impressed.

Jorge Garcia had two hits in the contest and Santiago Torres laced a double, they are part of a group of very athletic players who’ve come up from the Dominican Academy.

Extended Spring Training Game vs Blue Jays @ Carpenter Complex, Clearwater, FL :

Phillies 2 (7-2-4) Blue Jays 2

William Bergolla, Leonardo Rondon and Kliubert Avila. Junior Marin and Avila each doubled.

William Bergolla is really smooth at shortstop, glides to ground balls effortlessly.  He’s also baseball smart, I notice the little things, today with a runner on third William continually backed up the pitcher on the throw backs from the catcher, if the ball went astray he was positioned to make the recovery.  As a hitter he impressed with bat to ball skills, hit hard line drives to both sides of the field.  Leonardo Rondon has similar qualities, he takes charge of the field when he’s catching which he was today, reminds teammates of the game situations and is very vocal in his enthusiasm and encouragement of others.  He’s a heady player as well, busts out of the box on hits and always on the hunt for an advantage.  Really quick hands, good hitter, he can play.

Mavis Graves started todays game and pitched two scoreless frames, good pop on the fastball.  Starlyn Castillo pitched two innings, Guisseppe Velasquez went three innings, Josh Bortka and Seth Nightingale pitched an inning each.
