5/17/23 : Minor League Roundup


International League ( AAA ) - Lehigh Valley 10 (20-20) Worcester 3 (20-21) - 10 innings

Worcester, MA - Polar Park


Summary :


Jorge Alfaro hit a two run home run for Worcester in the first inning.


Greg Allen walked, stole second and scored on a single by Nick Sogard for Worcester in the fourth inning.


Lehigh Valley loaded the bases in the fifth inning on a fielding error, walk and single by Weston Wilson.  Jhailyn Ortiz singled to score two runs.


Scott Kingery singled in the sixth inning and scored on a double by Vimael Machin.


The game went into extra innings tied at three apiece.


Jake Cave led off the 10th with a double to score placed runner Jordan Qsar.  The hit extended Cave’s hitting streak to twelve games.  Jim Haley singled to score Cave. Scott Kingery singled, Vimael Machin doubled to score Haley and send Kingery to third base.  Vito Friscia walked to load the bases, Weston Wilson singled to score two runs.  Simon Muzziotti grounded out but scored Friscia. Jordan Qsar singled to score Wilson.  The Iron Pigs scored seven runs and sent ten batters to the plate in the inning 👀.


On the Hill :


Christopher Sanchez started and pitched four and two thirds innings, three runs charged against him on four hits and two walks.  McKinley Moore stranded an inherited runner and went on to pitch one and one third scoreless frames.  Ben Bowden pitched a perfect inning.  Luis Ortiz pitched a perfect 8th inning. Yunior Marte popped the mitt at 98 to 99 mph and struck out two batters in a scoreless and dominant ninth inning (14 pitches - 10 strikes).  Jesus Cruz pitched a perfect 10th inning with two strikeouts included to close it out.


At the Bat :


Weston Wilson (two singles & a double) had three hits as did Scott Kingery (three singles).  Vimael Machin hit two doubles and posted two RBIs, Jhailyn Ortiz (single & double) had two hits.  Jake Cave doubled.

Bridgewater, NJ - TD Bank Ballpark


Summary :


Oliver Dunn walked in the second inning, advanced on a single by Matt Kroon and scored on a fielder’s choice/throwing error by Somerset’s first baseman (over threw his pitcher covering first base on a ground ball hit by Ethan Wilson).  McCarthy Tatum was hit by a pitch, Kroon scored on a missed catch on a pop-up by Somerset shortstop Trey Sweeney.   A 5-4-3 double play grounder allowed Wilson to score.


Carlos De La Cruz doubled down the right field line in the fourth inning, he scored on a single by Johan Rojas.


Everson Pereira homered for Somerset in the third inning.


Madison Stokes and Carlos De La Cruz walked in the fifth inning, Johan Rojas reached on a fielders choice groundout. Stokes scored on a balk (disengagement violation) and Rojas advanced to second base, he then stole third base.  Oliver Dunn singled to score Rojas.


McCarthy Tatum singled in the 6th inning, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Madison Stokes.  Carlos De La Cruz singled to score Stokes.


Reading loaded the bases on walks in the seventh inning, a fourth walk forced in a run.


On the Hill :


Griff McGarry threw primarily fastballs (sat at 94-96 mph) and was consistently in the strike zone as he pitched a very encouraging outing throwing 45 pitches in two and two thirds innings allowing just one hit and one walk, he struck out five batters.  Cristian Hernandez struck out five batters in two innings of relief work, he gave up one run on three hits.  Adam Leverett pitched two and one third scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out four batters. Max Kuhns finished by pitching two scoreless innings, he struck out five batters.  Reading pitchers struck out 19 Somerset batters in the game 😳.


Web Gem :


Second baseman Oliver Dunn made a diving catch on a 98 mph line drive to record the first out of the third inning.


At the Bat :


Carlos De La Cruz (single & double) and Matt Kroon (two singles) each had two hits.

South Atlantic League ( High A ) - Jersey Shore 8 (15-16) Wilmington 3 (18-16)

Lakewood, NJ - ShoreTown Ballpark


Summary :


Kendall Simmons walked in the second inning, went to third when he attempted to steal second base and Wilmington’s shortstop missed the throw from the catcher for an error.  Marcus Lee Sang doubled to score Simmons.  Lee Sang advanced to third on a fielding error and scored on a ground out.


Three singles scored a run for Wilmington in the third inning.  A single by Caleb Farmer loaded the bases.  A bases loaded walk scored a run and a sac fly scored the third run of the inning.


Caleb Ricketts reached on a throwing error in the bottom of the third and went to third on a double by Kendall Simmons.  They both scored on a three run home run by Andrik Nava.


Anthony Quirion singled in the fourth inning and scored on a triple by Caleb Ricketts.


Marcus Lee Sang was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning, he advanced to third base on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a 104 mph line drive single by Andrik Nava.


On the Hill :


Rafael Marcano pitched two and two thirds innings of scoreless relief, only one hit allowed.  Tristan Garnett followed him with a scoreless frame. Rodolfo Sanchez pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts, did ya know that Rodolfo has struck out 48% of the batters he’s faced this season 😳.  Tommy McCollum struck out two batters in a perfect inning to close it out.


Web Gem :


Center fielder Jared Carr made an over the shoulder running catch on the warning track in the third inning.


At the Bat :


Andrik Nava had a day with two hits (single & HR) and four RBIs.  Marcus Lee Sang and Kendall Simmons each doubled, Caleb Ricketts tripled.  Simmons extended his hitting streak to eleven games.


Notes :


Hao Yu Lee left the game in the third inning after attempting to field a ground ball, looked like a twisted knee.



Florida State League ( Low A )  Clearwater 5 (26-9) Bradenton 4 (20-15)

Clearwater, FL - BayCare Ballpark


Summary :


Jordan Viars homered in the bottom of the first inning, his third tater of the season.


Clearwater loaded the bases in the second inning as Cade Fergus doubled, Cole Moore walked and Freylin Minyety singled.  Erick Brito hit a sac fly to score a run.  Bryan Rincon doubled to score a run.


Nick Cimillo homered for Bradenton in the seventh inning.


Two walks started Bradenton’s eighth inning, both runners advanced on stolen bases.  Termarr Johnson doubled to right field to score two runs, he was called out at third base attempting to stretch his hit into a triple which caused the Marauders third base coach to be thrown out of the game for arguing with a few choice words 🥴🤓.


Bradenton tied the game in the ninth as Nick Cimillo singled, a pinch runner for him advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and a two out single by Jesus Castillo scored the run.


Bryan Rincon walked it off with a one out home run in the bottom of the ninth!


The Threshers have now won 14 consecutive home games.


On the Hill :


Gabriel Cotto threw five scoreless innings in his Threshers season debut (was transferred from Jersey Shore last week) allowing just one hit and three walks, he struck out five batters.


At the Bat :


Bryan Rincon (double & HR) and Freylin Minyety (single & double) had two hits.  Cade Fergus doubled.  Jordan Viars homered.

Three pitchers threw side bullpen sessions, pitchers who threw today - Jhordany Mezquita, Dominic Pipkin and Daniel Harper.  Drew Garrett threw a live BP session.

5/16/23 : Phillies Red 8 (6-2-1) Tigers1 3


Neify Rosario and Jose Leanez had two hits.  Leanez, Manolfi Jimenez and Jarol Martinez doubled.  Brahian Silva tripled.  Victor Cardozo and Andres Hernandez had two RBIs.  Juan Amarante, Jeffrey German and Adilson Peralta each pitched two scoreless innings, German and Peralta  struck out four batters apiece.


5/16/23 : Phillies White 7 (6-2-1) Nationals 6


Jerffson Peña and Yhoan Escolana had two hits. Andres Tabares, Yhoan Escolona, Fernando Hernandez and Jose Marchan each doubled. Jerffson Peña tripled.  Ezequiel Ventura and Edwar Chirinos each pitched two scoreless innings.

Reading : INF Cam Cannon activated from the seven day IL.


Jersey Shore :  RHP Albertus Barber released.  C Arturo DeFreitas activated from the Development List.
