5/17/24 : Minor League Roundup

International League ( AAA ) - Norfolk 4 (21-22) Lehigh Valley 0 (16-24 )

Norfolk, VA - Harbor Park    

Summary :

Three walks loaded the bases for Norfolk in the 2nd inning, a single scored a run.

A walk, a fly ball that dropped for a double (miscommunication between right fielder Matt Kroon and center fielder Jordan Luplow) and a sacrifice fly scored a run for Norfolk in the 5th, a double down the left field line scored another.

A single and double in the 7th inning scored Norfolk’s 4th run of the game.

At Bat : 0 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 9 K’s

Matt Kroon had three hits (single and two doubles).  Scott Kingery had two hits (singles).

On The Hill : 4 R, 9 H, 6 BB, 7 K’s

Mick Abel pitched 6 innings - 3 R, 5 H, 5 BB, 6 K’s - 98 pitches - 57 strikes - had a good curve tonight and late life on the FB - battled - pitched in and out of jams.  Beau Burrows pitched an inning, 1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K.  Andrew Bellatti pitched 2/3 of an inning - 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 0 K’s.  Taylor Lehman retired the only batter he faced on a groundout and scored out.

Defensive Gem :

Center fielder Jordan Luplow caught a fly ball with one out and the bases loaded in the second inning and made a perfect throw to home plate to nail the base runner who had tagged up from third base to complete an inning ending double play 👀💪.

Did Ya Know 🧐 :

Cody Roberts had a huge hit Thursday, a three-run homer, his first long ball of the season. He's 6-for-15 this season and has even chipped in a 1-2-3 inning on the mound. Roberts is facing his old organziation as he was drafted by the Orioles

in 2018 out of UNC. The Phillies took Roberts in the 2022 MiLB Rule 5 Draft.

Eastern League ( AA ) - Richmond 8 (16-21) Reading 3 (16-21)

Richmond, VA. - The Diamond

Summary :

Kendall Simmons doubled in the second inning, went to third on a ground out by Marcus Lee Sang and scored on a ground out by Trevor Schwecke.

Richmond scored three runs in the 6th inning on two singles and two doubles.

Marcus Lee Sang singled in the seventh, Casey Martin walked.  Arturo De Freitas singled to score two runs.

Richmond scored five runs in the 8th inning on two walks, a stolen base, throwing error (Arturo DeFreitas), three singles and a sacrifice fly.

On The Hill : 8 R, 12 H, 2 BB, 9 K’s

Matt Osterberg pitched well - 6 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 0 BB, 9 K’s - 83 pitches - 59 strikes - at one point had retired 11 batters in order.

Wesley Moore pitched a scoreless inning - 2 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s - 17 pitches - 12 strikes.  Tough outing for Tommy McCollum - faced 6 batters - 0 outs recorded, 5 R, 2 BB, 4 H - 22 pitches - 12 strikes.  Eury Ramos retired all three batters he faced, two fly outs, one groundout - one of two inherited runners scored.

At Bat : 3 R, 6 H, 2 BB, 6 K’s

Kendall Simmons and Trevor Schwecke each doubled.

Reading set a new season-high with five doubles in Wednesday night’s game. It surpassed the Fightin Phils previous season-high of four doubles in a game.   Reading’s season-high for doubles in a game last season was five, which they did five times. Carson Taylor and Robert Moore each had two doubles in the loss, tying the most by a R-Phils player in a game this season.  -

South Atlantic League ( High A )  - Hudson Valley 6 (19-15) Jersey Shore 3 (20-17)

Wappingers Falls, NY -  Heritage Financial Park

Summary :

Leandro Pineda singled in the second inning, went to third base on a single by Felix Reyes and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrick Nava.

A walk, stolen base and single scored a run for Hudson Valley in the fifth.

A walk, single and wild pitch scored a run for Hudson Valley in the sixth. A single scored another run.  Kiko Romero hit a two run home run to add a couple more.

Four walks scored a run for HV in the 8th inning.

Cade Fergus and Erick Brito singled in the 9th inning, Otto Kemp singled to score a run.  Kemp advanced to second on defensive indifference - he scored on a single by Leandro Pineda.

On The Hill : 6 R, 6 H, 7 BB, 11 K’s

Eiberson Castellano pitched 5.2 innings, 5 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 7 K’s - 93 pitches - 57 strikes.  Andrew Baker pitched 1.1 innings - retired all four batters faced - 3 K’s.  Andrew Walling pitched an inning - 1 R, 0 H, 4 BB, 1 K.

At Bat : 3 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 5 K’s

Leandro Pineda had two hits (singles).

Did Ya Know 🧐 :

Bryan Rincon hit his first two High-A home runs in the games on May 15th and 16th at Hudson Valley.  He has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games, over which he is 12-39 with three doubles, five walks and two home runs. Rincon began the year 2-28 but since then is 15-52. Rincon joined the BlueClaws on August 16th last year with Justin Crawford and they were the 799th and 800th players to play for the BlueClaws.  Rincon was a 14th round pick in 2022 from Shaler Area HS in Pittsburgh, where he went after growing up in Venezuela.

Florida State League ( Low A )  - Clearwater 12 (25-12) Daytona 6 (19-18)

Clearwater, FL - BayCare BallPark

Summary :

Ariel Almonte hit a two run home run for Daytona in the first inning.

Trent Farquhar singled in the bottom of the first, Aidan Miller doubled.  Rafael Marchan grounded out to score a run.

Devin Saltiban walked in the second inning, stole second and scored on a single by Avery Owusu-Asiedu.

Rafael Marchan and Bryson Ware hit home runs in the third inning.

Three singles and a double scored two runs for Daytona in the 4th inning.

Aidan Miller walked in the 5th inning, Rafael Marchan singled.  Keaton Anthony singled to score a run.  Devin Saltiban doubled to score another.

Trent Farquhar walked in the 6th inning and scored on a double by Aidan Miller.

Daytona scored a run in the 8th on a single, two walks and a ground out.

Keaton Anthony doubled in the 8th inning, Bryson Ware walked.  Devin Saltiban doubled to score them both.  Kehden Hettiger and Raylin Heredia walked.  A wild pitch scored Saltiban.   With two outs in the inning Daytona brought in one of their catchers to pitch. Trent Farquhar doubled to score two runs.

Daytona scored a run in the 9th on four walks.

On The Hill : 6 R, 7 H, 11 BB, 9 K’s

Casey Steward went 5.2 innings - 4 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 7 K’s - 95 pitches - 57 strikes.  Jayden Estanista pitched 1.1 innings, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 K - 24 pitches - 12 strikes.  Drew Garrett pitched 1.2 innings - 2 R, 1 H, 6 BB, 0 K’s - 47 pitches - 17 strikes.  Josh Bortka struck out the only batter he faced on four pitches.

At Bat : 12 R, 13 H, 13 BB, 10 K’s

Devin Saltiban hit two doubles, posted three RBIs, walked once and scored a run.  Aidan Miller hit two doubles and walked twice.  Keaton Anthony had two hits (single & double) and a walk. Rafael Marchan had two hits (single & HR), a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored.  Bryson Ware homered.  Trent Farquhar had two hits(single & double), walked four times, scored twice and had two RBIs.  Kehden Hettiger walked twice.

The Threshers have won all eight games in which Saul Teran has pitched. Nikau Pouaka-Grego and Jordan Viars each extended their on-base streaks to double digits by reaching in both games of yesterday’s doubleheader.

Florida Complex League - FCL Phillies 7 (5-4) FCL Yankees 3 (4-6)

Clearwater, FL - Carpenter Complex

Summary :

A hit batter, double and throwing error (catcher Eduardo Tait) resulted in a run for the Yankees in the first inning.

Aroon Escobar homered in the bottom of the first.

Two walks, stolen base, balk, passed ball and ground out scored two runs for the Yankees in the second inning.

Jerffson Pena singled in the second inning, stole second and scored when Diego Gonzalez reached on a throwing error by the Yankee third baseman.

Guillermo Rosario singled in the 4th, Rickardo Perez was hit by a pitch and Jerffson Pena singled.  Manolfi Jimenez grounded out to score a run.  Diego Gonzalez singled to score another.   Ezra Farmer doubled to score a run.  Starlyn Caba grounded out which scored a run.

Aroon Escobar hit his second home run of the game in the 6th inning.

On The Hill : 3 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 5 K’s

Wilmer Blanco pitched five innings - 3 R - 2 earned, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 K’s.  Luis Gonzalez pitched two innings, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K.

At Bat : 7 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 5 K’s

Aroon Escobar hit two home runs.  Jerffson Pena also had two hits (singles).  Ezra Farmer doubled.

System Transactions :

Lehigh Valley : Darick Hall placed on the 7-day IL (retroactive to 5/16) with a Concussion.

Reading : Matt Osterberg reinstated from the Development List, Lachlan Wells placed on the Development List.

Clearwater : Jared Thomas has been returned from his rehab assignment, reinstated from the 7-Day Injured List, and transferred from the Jersey Shore BlueClaws to the Clearwater Threshers.
