5/18/24 : Minor League Roundup

International League ( AAA ) - Norfolk 13 (22-22) Lehigh Valley 11 (16-25)

Norfolk, VA - Harbor Park    


Summary :


Scott Kingery doubled in the 1st inning, went to second on a fly out and scored on a ground out by Weston Wilson.


Aramis Garcia doubled in the 2nd inning, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cal Stevenson.


A single, double and single scored two Norfolk runs in the 2nd inning.


A walk, single and three doubles scored four runs for Norfolk in the 3rd inning.


Three singles, a double a fielding error and hit batter scored four runs for Norfolk in the 4th inning.


Norfolk scored a 5th inning run on two walks, a passed ball and sacrifice fly.   They scored another run in the 6th on a single and fielding error.


Jim Haley doubled in the 7th, Cal Stevenson singled.  Haley scored on a single by Nick Podkul.  Cody Roberts and Scott Kingery walked to score another.  Weston Wilson singled to score two runs.


Jim Haley walked, Aramis Garcia singled and Cal Stevenson walked in the 8th inning.  Nick Podkul walked to force in a run.

Cody Roberts reached on an error on which two runs scored. Scott Kingery singled to score one more.  Jordan Luplow walked. Weston Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to score a run.


A double, hit batter and walk loaded the bases for Norfolk in the 8th inning.  A sacrifice fly scored a run.


The game lasted 3 and 1/2 hours 😳.


At Bat : 11 R, 10 H, 7 BB, 14 K’s


Scott Kingery had three hits (single & two doubles) a walk and three RBIs.  Cal Stevenson had two hits (single & double) and walked twice. Aramis Garcia had two hits (single & double).  Jim Haley walked and doubled.  Weston Wilson had four RBIs.


On The Hill : 13 R, 15 H, 8 BB, 2 K’s


Ricardo Pinto pitched 2.2 innings - 6 R, 8 H, 2 BB, 0 K’s.  Tyler Gilbert pitched 1.1 innings - 4 R - 2 earned, 4 H, 1 BB, 0 K’s.

Griff McGarry pitched an inning - 1 R, 0 H, 4 BB, 1 K - 34 pitches - 11 strikes.  Beau Burrows pitched 2 innings, 1 unearned  R, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s - 40 pitches - 25 strikes.  Andrew Bellatti pitched an inning, 1 R, 1 H, 1 HB, 1 BB, 1 K.

The 'Pigs won three games in a row for the first time this season, coming by the skin of their teeth with two, two-run wins and a one-run triumph to begin the series against Norfolk. It was the first three-game winning streak since the 'Pigs won four in a row against Rochester, 9/13/23-9/16/23. It's also the first time the 'Pigs have won three in a row against Norfolk since 6/20/16-6/22/16 at Harbor Park.


Eastern League ( AA ) - Richmond 2 (17-21) Reading 0 (16-22)

Richmond, VA. - The Diamond


Summary :


Grant McCray homered for Richmond in the 2nd inning.


A triple and groundout scored a Richmond run in the 3rd inning.


On The Hill : 2 R, 8 H, 3 BB, 11 K’s


Robinson Pina pitched 4 innings, 2 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s.  Carlos Francisco went two innings - 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s.  Tristan Garnett pitched a scoreless frame - 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s.  Tyler McKay pitched a perfect inning - 2 K’s.


At Bat : 0 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 14 K’s


Carlos De La Cruz had two hits (single & double).

Coming into tonight’s game dating back to last season, the Fightin Phils hold just a 1-12 record against the Flying Squirrles. After being swept in the season-opening series in Richmond in 2023, and dropping the first four of this week’s trip to The Diamond, Reading has not won a game at Richmond since July 9, 2022.


South Atlantic League ( High A )  - Jersey Shore 14 (21-17) Hudson Valley 8 (19-16)

Summary :


Hudson Valley plated three runs in the first inning on a walk, single and two doubles.


Leandro Pineda led off the second inning with a home run.  Zach Arnold walked and scored on a triple by William Bergolla.  A balk allowed Bergolla to score.


Jared Serna homered for HV to lead off the third inning. A single, walk and single followed to score another run.


Hendry Mendez walked in the 4th inning, he was forced out at second on a ground ball on which Zach Arnold reached base.  William Bergolla singled to send Arnold to third base.  A wild pitch scored Arnold.


Jared Serna hit a two run home run in the 4th inning.


Erick Brito singled in the 5th inning and scored on a double by Bryan Rincon.  Rincon moved up to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Cade Fergus.


A double, single and ground out scored a run for HV in the bottom of the 5th.


Leandro Pineda and Cade Fergus walked in the 7th, Hendry Mendez singled to score Pineda.  Fergus scored on a double play ground out by Zach Arnold.


Jordan Dissin doubled in the 8th inning and scored on a triple by Otto Kemp.  A wild pitch scored Kemp.  Leandro Pineda walked and scored on a triple by Cade Fergus.  Hendry Mendez walked, Zach Arnold was hit by a pitch. William Bergolla singled to score two runs.


Otto Kemp tripled in the 9th inning, he scored on a wild pitch.


On The Hill : 8 R, 12 H, 8 BB, 7 K’s


Braeden Fausnaught went 4.1 innings, 8 R, 9 H, 3 BB, 3 K’s - 83 pitches - 52 strikes.   Alex Rao pitched 1.1 innings, 0 R, 0 H, 3 BB, 2 K’s.  Gunner Mayer pitched two scoreless innings - 2 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s.  Trey Dillard pitched an inning - 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K.  Benyony Robles finished - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K.


At Bat : 14 R, 14 H, 9 BB, 7 K’s


William Bergolla and Otto Kemp each had three hits, Leandro Pineda (single & HR) and Bryan Rincon (two doubles) each had two hits.  William Bergolla, Otto Kemp (two) and Cade Fergus tripled.  Jordan Dissin doubled.  Hendry Mendez singled and walked three times, Leandro Pineda drew two walks and scored three runs. Zach Arnold was hit by a pitch and walked twice, he scored two runs.

While the BlueClaws are 16-5 at home with a team ERA of 2.33, they are 4-12 on the road coming into tonight’s game with a team ERA of 5.39.  They had dropped seven straight road games, the last three at Aberdeen (April 26-28) and the first four at Hudson Valley (May 14-16).


Florida State League ( Low A )  - Clearwater 6 (26-12) Daytona 2 (19-19)

Summary :


Devin Saltiban homered in the 2nd inning.  Jordan Viars walked, Raylin Heredia tripled to score him.  Avery Owusu-Asiedu singled to score Heredia.


Daytona scored a run in the 4th on a throwing error (Mavis Graves), ground out and bloop single.


Raylin Heredia singled and Aidan Miller walked in the 4th inning, they scored on a double by Luis Caicuto.


Devin Saltiban hit his second home run of the game in the ninth inning.


On The Hill : 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 14 K’s


George Klassen eased back into action by going two perfect frames - three strikeouts - 43 pitches - 27 strikes.  Four seamer was 96-100 mph, curve ball and cutter.  Mavis Graves was excellent - 6 IP, 1 unearned R, 1 H and a whopping 10 K’s 👀 - 89 pitches - 53 strikes.  Jose Peña Jr closed it - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 HB, 1 K


Florida Complex League - FCL Tigers 6 (8-3)  FCL Phillies 1 (5-5)

Clearwater, FL - Carpenter Complex


Summary :


Hot and humid weather even with a 10 AM start.


The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning on a double, walk, single and sacrifice fly.


Yemil Rosario walked in the third inning, advanced to second base on a groundout and scored on a single by Aroon Escobar.


The Tigers scored a fifth inning run on a single, stolen base, fly out and throwing error (Yemal Flores).


Three walks, two doubles and a sacrifice fly scored three runs for the Tigers in the ninth inning.


On The Hill : 6 R, 12 H, 5 BB, 9 K’s


Enrique Segura started and pitched five innings - 3 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s.  Juan Amarante pitched a perfect inning - 1 K.  Alexis De La Cruz pitched an inning - 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K.  Kleyderve Andrade went on frame - 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K.  Josbel Garcia pitched an inning - 3 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 1 K.


At Bat : 1 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 12 K’s


Juan Villavicencio had two hits (singles).


Defensive Gems :


Catcher Guillermo Rosario picked off a runner at second base on a throw back in the second inning.  In the third inning second Second Juan Villavicencio made a great relay throw from short center field to the plate to nail a runner attempting to score from second base on a knock to center field - center fielder Jerffson Pena got on the ball quickly and made an accurate throw to Villavicencio who unleashed a seed to catcher Guillermo Rosario who applied the tag.
