Found some shade in the parking lot outside of Ashburn Field at Carpenter Complex to watch the extended spring training ( XST ) Phillies take on the Tigers in a 1 PM scrimmage.
Highlights :
The Phillies prevailed 6-4 in an eight inning contest ...
DH Kendall Simmons doubled and advanced to third on an error in the first inning, he scored on a double by C Chris Burke.
RF Yhoswar Garcia smoked a double in the third inning, very quick hands ... generates excellent bat speed ... from my observances drives the ball to the middle of the field which in my opinion is ideal for a young hitter ... for any hitter really 😎. Yhoswar tripled off the center field batting eye to drive in a run in the fifth inning.
3B Jose Tortolero hit a bases loaded triple in the fourth inning.
The Tigers SS Colton Keith hit the game’s only home run ... a blast over the right field wall. Being the only one in attendance I added it to my bucket of baseballs at home 🤓.
On the Hill :
RH DJ Jefferson - 3 IP - good velocity ... battled command a bit ... promising arm.
LH Jake McKenna - 1 IP - couldn’t find the strike zone ... that’s why they scrimmage ... just 19 yrs old and in first year of pro ball
LH Jaylen Smith - 1 IP - looked sharp, more zip than I remember
LH Erubiel Armenta - 1 IP - struck out side, 1 BB - faced just four batters ... impressive
RH Brendan Bell - 2 IP ... strong second frame to finish
LH Joey Wentz , one of Tigers top prospects, pitched the second inning for them, the 23 year old is on the comeback trail from TJ surgery. From my vantage point he threw the ball really well.
At Bat :
Kendall Simmons - Double & 2 BB in 4 plate appearances - powerful swing - big bat potential
Chris Burke - singled & doubled in three AB’s
Jose Tortolero - triple & 3 RBIs
Oscar Gonzalez - double
Yhoswar Garcia - doubled & tripled plus drew a walk out of leadoff spot - exciting player to watch - plays with great emotion
Uziel Viloria - 2 singles
