5/2/23 : Minor League Roundup


International League ( AAA ) -  Lehigh Valley 9 (13-14) Syracuse 7 (14-14)

Syracuse, NY - NBT Bank Stadium


Summary :


A heavy rain put the game in a delay in the top of the third inning.  After a brief delay play resumed.


Dustin Peterson hit a two run home run in the top of the fourth inning.


Mark Vientos hit a two run home run for Syracuse in the bottom of the fourth inning.


Jaylin Davis hit a two run triple for Syracuse in the 6th inning, they also had a walk, single and double in the inning.


Jordan Qsar and Weston Wilson singled in the seventh inning, Scott Kingery walked to load the bases.  Jim Haley doubled to score two runs.  Esteban Quiroz doubled to score two more. Quiroz advanced to third on a single by John Hicks and scored on a fielding error on which Simon Muzzioti reached base.  Hicks scored on a single by Dustin Peterson.


Esteban Quiroz singled in Jim Haley (reached on an error) in the 8th inning.


Jaylin Davis hit a two run tater for Syracuse in the 8th inning.


Syracuse scored a run in the ninth on three singles.


On the Hill :


Ranger Suarez started and threw two scoreless innings allowing just a walk, he struck out one batter.  Michael Plassmeyer went four innings.  Jake Jewell pitched a scoreless seventh inning.


At the Bat :


Simon Muzziotti hit three singles, now hitting .392 for the season 😳.  Esteban Quiroz, John Hicks and Dustin Peterson each had two hits. Jim Haley & Esteban Quiroz doubled. Dustin Peterson homered.

“Coming into tonight’s game the IronPigs led the International League with 46 stolen bases, having been caught just six times. On the 46 stolen bases, the 'Pigs have an average sprint speed of 28.7 ft/sec, which ranked 15th in all of AAA baseball.  Scott Kingery led the way with 9 stolen bases, which was tied fourth in the International League. Catcher John Hicks had also snagged eight stolen bases as well and 12 different 'Pigs had stolen at least one base.”



Eastern League ( AA) -  Reading 6 (7-14) Hartford 4 (11-9) - eleven innings

Hartford, CT - Dunkin’ Park


Summary :


Johan Rojas singled in the fourth inning and advanced to second on a throwing error, he scored on a single by Ethan WilsonMatt Kroon singled to score Wilson.


Garrett Whitley hit a two run home run for Reading in the 5th inning.


Niko Decolati singled in the 5th inning for Hartford, stole second and scored on a throwing error on a subsequent play.


Kyle Datres homered for Hartford in the 6th inning.


A single, walk and RBI double (Hunter Goodman) scored a run for Hartford in the 8th inning. A walk loaded the bases, another walk scored another run.  Brett Schulze came into the no out bases loaded jam, he struck out two, walked one (run scored) and got a fly out stranding two of three inherited runners.


The game went into extra innings tied at four apiece.


Ethan Wilson hit a two run home run in the 11th inning scoring placed runner Carlos De La Cruz ahead of him.


On the Hill :


Nick Nelson stretched out to five innings, he allowed one unearned run on six hits, walked none and struck out four batters throwing 58 pitches - 46 for strikes.  Ethan Lindow pitched two innings in relief allowing one run on one hit and one walk, he struck out three batters. Brett Schulze pitched an inning. Taylor Lehman pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts. Max Kuhns hit 97 mph with the petrol in the eleventh inning striking out two batters to seal the win. 🔥


At the Bat :


Ethan Wilson had three hits (two singles and a HR) and three RBIs, he scored twice.   Carlos De La Cruz doubled, Garrett Whitley homered.

'‘This Day in Baseballtown History -  May 2, 1970: At Reading, Greg Luzinski hits his first Double-A home run, a blast that reportedly lands five feet shy of the brick wall in left field, an estimated 500 feet from home plate. Reading beats Manchester, 7-3, in a game that is called in the 6th inning due to rain.”



South Atlantic League ( High A ) - Jersey Shore 7 (9-9) Hickory 5 (10-10)

Hickory, NC - L.P. Frans Stadium


Summary :


In the first inning Hao Yu Lee was hit by a pitch, Kendall Simmons doubled to left field to score him.  Leandro Pineda homered to score Simmons ahead of himself.


Daniel Mateo singled in the bottom of the first for Hickory , stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a double steal with Max Acosta (walked).  Geisel Cepeda singled to score Acosta.


Leandro Pineda hit his second home run of the game in the third inning.


Geisel Cepeda walked in the 4th inning for Hickory, went to third on a double by Keybar Rodriquez and scored on a single by Angel Aponte.


Hao Yu Lee was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning, advanced to second base when Marcus Lee Sang walked and scored on a double by Leandro Pineda.  Rixon Wingrove singled to score Lee Sang.   The BlueClaws executed a double steal with Pineda scoring and Wingrove swiping second base.


Josh Hatcher doubled for Hickory in the 7th inning and scored on a single by Max Acosta.


Hickory loaded the bases with one out in the 8th inning on a single, walk and hit batter.  Jayce Easley hit a sac fly to score a run.

Jordi Martinez came in to relieve Sam Jacobsak and worked out of the jam allowing just one run to score. Martinez pitched a scoreless ninth inning as well.


On the Hill :


Gabriel Cotto started and went three innings allowing two runs on three hits and three walks.  Albertus Barber made his BlueClaws season debut by pitching the third inning.  Alex Garbrick continued the dominance he started last week going two perfect innings with four strikeouts, he’s got a string of four consecutive perfect frames.  Chase Antle pitched the seventh inning.

Jordi Martinez went 1 2/3 scoreless innings to close out the win.


At the Bat :


Leandro Pineda had a night with three hits (double & 2 HR’s) and four RBIs.   Kendall Simmons doubled.

“The BlueClaws are in Hickory for six games and will then head to Greensboro for six games next week. These are the only six times they’ll play Hickory this year.   Coming into this game since April 19th, the BlueClaws bullpen was 5-1 with a 2.92 ERA (37 IP, 29 H, 12 ER, 12 BB, 50 Ks) after pitching to an 8.75 ERA over the first seven games of the season (36 IP, 40 H, 35 ER, 24 BB, 36 Ks).”

Summary :


Ricardo Rosario doubled in the first inning, he scored on a triple by Caleb Ricketts.


Cristian Santana and Adinso Reyes each hit home runs for Lakeland in the second inning.


Peyton Graham doubled for Lakeland in the third and scored on a triple by Andrew Jenkins.


Caleb Ricketts singled in the bottom of the third, went to second on a walk to Chad Castillo and scored on a single by Emaarion Boyd.


Lakeland scored a run in the fifth on two walks and an RBI single by Andrew Jenkins.


A walk, hit batter and single scored a run for Lakeland in the 6th inning.


Emaarion Boyd doubled in the 6th inning, Bryan Rincon walked.  Boyd scored on a single by Erick Brito.  A wild pitch moved the runners up a base, Rincon scored on a ground out.


Emaarion Boyd walked in the 8th inning, stole second base and scored on a triple by Otto Kemp.   Erick Brito singled to score Kemp.


On the Hill :


Estibenzon Jimenez started and went 2 1/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits, he struck out six batters.  Danny Wilkinson went 2 2/3 innings in relief allowing one run on one hit and two walks, he struck out five batters.  Eduar Segovia went two innings,   Andrew Walling pitched a scoreless 8th inning and Orion Kerkering posted his 4th save with a scoreless ninth.


At the Bat :


Caleb Ricketts was 3 for 4 (two singles and a triple).  Emaarion Boyd had two hits (single & double), scored twice and stole a base.  Erick Brito had two singles.  Otto Kemp tripled. Ricardo Rosario and Bryan Rincon each doubled.

“Gabriel Rincones Jr. was awarded the Florida State League Player of the Week after going 8-20 with two homers and six RBIs in the sweep of St. Lucie at BayCare ballpark. He posted a slash line of .400/.520/.800 and hit safely at least once in all five games heplayed with three multi-hit games. He also scored eight runs in the series and drove in at least one run in each of the last three games, with a three-run and two-run homer in his last two games of the series. Rincones Jr.   Was also a menace on the basepaths, swiping five bags in six attempts.”

Fourteen pitchers threw side bullpen sessions, pitchers who threw today - Jon Duplantier, Jace Vines, Zach Haake, Oswald Medina, Noah Song, Griff McGarry, Konnor Ash, Jake McKenna, Christian McGowen, Micah Ottenbreit, Josh Bortka, Ty Collins, Elicier Bata and Giussepe Velasquez.


Two pitchers threw live batting practice - Andrew Bellatti and Mavis Graves


Extended Spring Training Game vs Blue Jays @ Bobby Mattick Training Center, Dunedin, FL :


Spectators other than scouts or parents aren’t allowed entrance into the Blue Jays complex.


Blue Jays 9 Phillies 1 (4-2-1)


The Phillies scored their lone run in the first inning.  Third baseman Felix Reyes was 2 for 3 (singles) and scored the run, he also stole a base.  Raylin Heredia doubled and was 1 for 3.  Dakota Kotowski had the RBI and was 1 for 3 with a single.  Matt Alifano singled, the team was held to five hits and two walks.


Jonathan Petit started on the mound and went two scoreless innings (one H, 1 BB, 2 K’s).  Eight other hurlers pitched (Nicoly Pina, Mason Ronan, Luis Gomez, Fernando Ortega, Jesus Querales, Malik Binns, Eric Garcia & Saul Teran).  Gomez went one and on third scoreless innings, no hits or walks and one strikeout.  Malik Binns and Saul Teran each pitched a scoreless inning.


System Transactions :


Reading : INF Drew Ellis and OF Garrett Whitley added to active roster. Herbert Iser transferred to Development List.


Clearwater : INF Randy Vasquez transferred from the 7 Day IL to the 60 Day IL, LHP Braeden Fausnaught placed on the 7 Day IL. Catcher Adony Mejia activated from the Development List.
