5/21/24 : Phillies sign RHP Blaine Knight to minor league contact

Blaine Knight (now 27 years old) was the 3rd round draft selection of the Baltimore Orioles in 2018 from the University of Arkansas.

He was released by the Orioles in March of 2023 after pitching four minor league seasons and appearing in 83 games (46 starts) posting a career 5.57 ERA in 279.1 IP with 238 strikeouts and 113 walks.  At the University of Arkansas he was a starting pitcher (54 appearances - 42 starts) and posted a 24-6 record over three seasons with a 3.01 ERA in 251.1 IP whiffing 244 batters and walking just 59.

A Prospects Live report on him from 2021 noted that “He mixes a plus fastball that sits 91-94 touching 97 when he reaches back, a plus slider-cutter, as well as average offerings in his changeup and curveball he can land for strikes. The thing that sticks out most about Knight is his ability to generate plus velocity with little effort in his delivery.”

I had the pleasure of chatting with him briefly at the complex a couple days ago and welcomed him on behalf of Phillies fans.  Blaine did not pitch last season after being released.  He threw a bullpen session today at the complex and looks forward to helping the organization presumably (by me) at one of the higher minor league levels.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
