5/30/22 : Week Eight Minor League Review ( 5/24 to 5/29 )

Players of the Week : Mickey Moniak ( Reading rehab ) & Rixon Wingrove ( Jersey Shore )

OF Mickey Moniak - went 9 for 23 ( .391 ) for the week at Reading appearing in 5 games - has hit in all 8 rehab appearances ( Clearwater & Reading ) going 13 for 33 ( .394 ). During the week in Reading Mickey had a triple and home run and scored five runs. His OBP for the week was .400. The 24 year old has been on rehab assignment since May 20th, he can be on such assignment for 20 days. Thus far the 1st round draft selection of the 2016 draft has shown he’s ready for his next opportunity, wherever that may be 🧐.

1B Rixon Wingrove - just last week we were watching the 22 year old from Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia on the backfields at the complex in extended spring training. He was promoted to Jersey Shore on Monday, the 24th and had himself a very strong week of play. Rixon went 7 for 19 ( .368 ) for the week with 3 home runs and 6 RBIs. The 6’5” slugger drove one of his home runs far over the right field concourse at Lakewood which is an area not many hitters can reach. Signed on 4/20/18 as an international free agent we’ve seen him succeed before, in 2019 GCL play he hit a very solid .298 with 5 homers and 37 RBIs for a division winning squad. He had his struggles this spring both with illness and subsequent performance, was just 3 for 27 in his stint with this year’s Clearwater Threshers but this week with new opportunity and surroundings he excelled, happy to see it. Keep it up mate !

Pitchers of the Week : Ben Brown ( Jersey Shore ) & James McArthur ( Reading )

RH Ben Brown - the 22 year old ( 2017 33rd round draft selection - Ward Melville HIgh School - East Setauket, NY ) threw five shutout innings on Saturday allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out eleven hitters. Velocity reads - FB ( 94 to 98 mph ), slider ( 91 to 92 mph ) & changeup ( 87-89 mph ). He’s got a scoreless inning streak of 16 1/3 innings during which he’s struck out a whopping 27 batters allowing just 7 hits and 3 walks ! I’ll be writing more about him on Wednesday morning when I highlight the players and pitchers of the month - Ben’s a shoe in for the May Award 😎.

RH James McArthur - the 25 year old from Texas who now resides in Colorado was the club’s 12th round draft selection in the 2018 draft out of the University of Mississippi. In his start on Friday night he threw six shutout innings allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out three batters. The fastball can register in the upper nineties, generally sits in the 93-95 range. His 6’7” height produces a pitch release point and arm angle that gets on the hitter quickly and adds an elusion of even higher velocity. Secondary offerings are a curve/slider and change-up. He finished the ‘21 regular season strong with Reading and also pitched in the Arizona Fall League earning a spot on the 40 man roster. After a slow start in April he’s pitched much better in May accumulating 25 1/3 innings and posting a 3.20 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 26 K’s and 9 walks.

Other Position Players with good weeks :

Lehigh Valley :

C Austin Wynns was 6 for 15 ( .400 ) and also had 6 walks posting an OBP of .571. The 31 year old veteran continues to be an on base machine for the Iron Pigs batting in the second spot in the order. For the month of May he’s hitting .415 ( 27 for 65 ) with an OBP of .558 and a slugging percentage of .615. Austin is hitting .370 for the season ( 34 for 92 ) with an OBP of .517 😳

Reading :

C Logan O’Hoppe - continues to excel - had a very solid week going 7 for 25 with a couple doubles. He’s had a great month hitting .321/.418/.615 in 88 plate appearances with 5 doubles, 6 home runs and 12 RBIs. Very bright future for the 22 year old.

UTL Ali Castillo - went 7 for 21 ( .333 ) - Ali had 8 game hitting streak end on 5/27 but has a hit in 9 of his last 10 games played during which he’s went 15 for 43 ( .349 ). The 32 year old was signed on 12/8/21 as a minor league free agent from the Nationals organization.

INF Kevin Vicuna - was 7 for 15 ( .467 ) for the week with 2 doubles and 2 triples. The 24 year old middle infielder just returned from the IL, we saw him at the Complex last week where he hit very well in extended spring games including a home run. Kevin was signed on 1/4/22 as a minor league free agent from the Jays organization.

OF/1B Aldrem Corredor had a good week reaching base 12 times in 28 plate appearances ( .428 OBP ) and walking seven times . He hit 2 home runs and drove in 6 runs. Aldrem is 26 years old and was signed on 1/4/22 from the Nationals organization as a minor league free agent.

INF Jonathan Guzman was 7 for 20 ( .350 ) including hitting a double and triple. He’s had a hit in 7 of his last 9 games played. As a 22 year old he’s one of the younger players in the Eastern League - was signed 8/17/15 from Esperanza, Dominican Republic.

1B Josh Ockimey was 6 for 16 ( .375 ) including a 3 hit game on Sunday. Josh has had a solid month of May hitting .278

( 24 for 86 ) as well. The 26 year old was signed as a minor league free agent on 2/14 from the Red Sox organization.

Jersey Shore :

OF Jared Carr - went 6 for 13 ( .462 ) with 5 walks during the week for a .611 OBP against Greenville hitting out of the lead off spot in the order. He has a hit in 8 of the last 10 games where he’s made a plate appearance and has reached based in all ten of those contests. During that stretch of games he’s hitting .343 ( 11 for 32 ). The 23 year old was drafted in the 13th round of the 2021 draft from Shepherd University in Shepherd, WV.

OF Ethan Wilson - was 6 for 19 ( .316 ) with a double, home run and four RBIs. He’s reached base in 8 of his last 9 games and is 11 for 31 ( .354 ) during that stretch with a double, triple, two home runs and eight RBIs. The 22 year old was the club’s 2nd round draft selection in the 2021 draft from South Alabama University.

Clearwater :

OF Wilfredo Flores - went 7 for 20 ( .350 ) for the week playing center field and is now hitting .319 for the season in 91 AB’s. The 22 year old from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic has always been a good hitter throughout his brief pro career to date - he’s a career .322 hitter in 478 AB’s - he hit .342 in the 2019 GCL in 120 AB’s. This season is his first extended full season assignment. Signed 5/8/18 as an international free agent.

3B Kendall Simmons - went 7 for 22 ( .318 ) during the week with a double and home run, he had a hit in every game and two in the Sunday contest. Kendall has a hit in 11 of his last 13 games played. The 22 year old 2018 6th round draft selection from Tattnall Square High School in Macon, GA has tremendous power - just a matter of consistency - perhaps this run is the start of that.
