5/6/21 : Minor League Roundup

According to Baseball America there will be a formal Gulf Coast League ( GCL ) this season. It’s slated to begin on June 28th and run thru September 18th with 21 teams in the league. In 2019 the Phillies fielded two GCL teams, home games played at Carpenter Complex. We are anticipating two Phillies GCL teams one again and our hopes are high that by the end of June admittance to the Complex will once again be enabled for fans to watch.

The Domincan Summer League is tentatively slated to begin play on July 12th and would run thru October 2nd. It’s to be determined still whether they play but again our hopes are high.

Low A SouthEast League - Clearwater 5 ( 2-1 ) Lakeland 0 ( 1-2 )

Summary :

A crisply played contest tonight, I was on hand for the first five frames. The Threshers posted two runs in the first inning keyed by an RBI double by 2B Casey Martin. They added two more runs in the second on three singles ( LF Corbin Williams, RF Hunter Markwardt and SS Luis Garcia ) and a sac fly ( 3B Edgar Made ) and another in the fourth on an RBI single by Made.

Outstanding Threshers pitching tonight took care of the rest.

On The Hill :

RH Eduar Segovia went 2 1/3 easy innings - 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 K’s - 50 pitches - 29 strikes . His fastball sat in the 93-94 slot touching 95 and he showed a slider as his predominant secondary. We like this young hurler a lot ... he didn’t disappoint tonight - was on a pitch count else could have went further.

LH JP Woodward retired the only two batters he faced ... one via strikeout.

RH Victor Vargas was also very good - 4 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 5 K’s - 55 pitches - 38 strikes. We’ve always have been impressed by his past performances as well ... fastball sat 91-93 plus he showed a slider, changeup and curve ball. The young man knows how to locate with all four pitches ... don’t think I’ve ever seen him get hit hard in any outing. He got the W.
