5/6/22 : Phillies sign OF Chris Sharpe to minor league contract

Writer: Steve PotterSteve Potter

The organization has signed 25 year old outfielder Chris Sharpe and assigned him to the Reading Phillies roster. Sharpe was the 14th round draft selection of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2017 draft from Massachusetts-Lowell University. He was released by Pittsburgh from their AAA affiliate Indianapolis on 4/25/22. Sharpe was a Florida State League All-Star with Bradenton in 2019 when he hit .292 in 64 games ( 226 AB’s ). That season he posted 31 doubles, 16 home runs and 68 RBIs with 17 stolen bases between Bradenton and AA level Altoona.

He struggled at the AAA level in 2021 with Indianapolis hitting just .196 in 108 games although did have 25 doubles. He strikes out quite a lot but has shown the ability to drive the baseball as well. Defensively he’s primarily a left fielder.

Reading is in need of position players, outfielders in particular. Today both Madison Stokes and Wendell Rijo were placed on the seven day IL. Freylin Minyety has been added to the Reading roster from the Clearwater Threshers to help fill the void.

Best wishes to the newest organization member Chris Sharpe and to Freylin as he moves up two rungs on the ladder.
