5/8/21 : Minor League Roundup

Coming into tonight’s games Phillies affiliates have played into extra innings in four of the sixteen contests. A total of 82 pitcher appearances were tallied which equates to an average of five different hurlers appearing per contest. Sixty two pitchers on the opening day rosters have appeared in at least one game with twenty having already appeared in two contests.


In tonight’s Affiliate action ...


Triple A East League - Lehigh Valley 7 ( 4-1 ) Rochester 2 ( 1-4 )


Summary :


Austin Listi doubled in the second inning and scored on a sac fly by Edgar Cabral after advancing to third base on a couple of walks. Ronald Torreyes doubled to score Travis Jankowski ( walked ) in a four run third inning. Listi singled to score Torreyes. After two walks the bases were loaded, Luke Williams singled to score two runs.


Listi singled to score Travis Jankowski in the fourth inning. Edgar Cabral produced an RBI single in the seventh inning.


Rochester scored single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.


On The Hill :


LH Christopher Sanchez - 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 3 K’s - 59 pitches - 33 strikes. Strong outing ... FB sitting in the 92-94 range


LH Ethan Evanko - 2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K - 32 pitches - 18 strikes - W

LH Kyle Dohy - 1 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s - 30 pitches - 18 strikes

RH Bryan Mitchell - 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s - 19 pitches - 12 strikes - Save


At Bat :


SS Ronald Torreyes was 2 for 4 with a double. 3B Austin Listi was 3 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored, he also walked once. 2B Luke Williams singled, doubled and walked in four plate appearances and had 2 RBIs. Catcher Edgar Cabral had two hits, a walk and two RBIs in three plate appearances.


Defensive Gem :


CF Mickey Moniak made a diving catch early in the game behind Christopher Sanchez.


Double A NorthEast League - Reading 6 ( 2-3 ) Erie 4 ( 3-2 )


Summary :


Erie scored a run in the top of the third inning. Reading tied the game in their half of the frame as Madison Stokes walked, eventually advanced to third base and scored on a wild pitch. Josh Stephen delivered an RBI double in the fourth inning, he scored on a single by Rodolfo Duran.


After Erie scored a run in the top of the fifth inning Reading plated two more in their half of the inning as Stephen and McCarthy Tatum each delivered sacrifice fly outs for runs.


Matt Vierling hit a solo home run in the seventh inning for the Fightins.


Erie scored twice in the eighth inning on a two run home run.


The Reading pitching staff struck out a whopping 18 Erie Seawolves batters 😳🤪


On The Hill :


RH Mark Appel - 2 2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 4 K’s - 56 pitches - 31 strikes ... decent first outing on a pitch count. FB range was 92-95 mph


LH Taylor Lehman - 3 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 7 K’s 😳 ... 64 pitches - 43 strikes - strong outing by the Penn State alum


LH Zach Warren - 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 4 BB, 1 K - 6 batters faced - 30 pitches - 12 strikes

RH Tyler Carr - 2 IP, 2 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K’s - 34 pitches - 19 strikes

RH Joel Cesar - 1 perfect IP, 1 K - Save - 11 pitches - 7 strikes


At Bat :


RF Josh Stephen doubled and had two RBI’s in three AB’s. CF Matt Vierling had two hits including a home run and scored twice. Catcher Colby Fitch walked twice in four plate appearances.


Defensive Gem :


CF Matt Vierling threw out a runner at the plate to end the first inning.


Note :


Former Phillie RHP Ricardo Pinto was the starting pitcher for Erie.


High A East League - Hudson Valley 9( 2-3 ) Jersey Shore 3 ( 3-2 )


Summary :


Jhailyn Ortiz singled to score Bryson Stott ( walked ) in the first inning with the game’s first run. Ortiz and Logan O’Hoppe ( singled ) both scored on a double by Rudy Rott.

Hudson Valley tied the score with three runs in their second inning. The Renegades pulled away with two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh.


On The Hill :


RH Jack Perkins - 1 2/3 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s - 40 pitches - 27 strikes

LH Brian Marconi - 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s - 39 pitches - 24 strikes

LH Riley Wilson - 2 1/3 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s - 53 pitches - 29 strikes

RH Blake Brown - 2/3 IP, 3 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K’s - 34 pitches - 19 strikes

RH Braden Zarbnisky - 2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K’s - 41 pitches - 28 strikes


At Bat :


RF Jhailyn Ortiz had two hits and an RBI. 1B Rudy Rott was 2 for 4, he doubled, walked and had two RBI’s. 2B Bryson Stott walked three times in five plate appearances. Rott is hitting .385 thru the first five games.


Low A SouthEast League - Clearwater 4 ( 3-2 ) Lakeland 2 ( 2-3 )


Summary :


Lakeland scored a run in the top of the first inning and two more in the sixth inning ... one of those was on a double steal with Wenceel Perez stealing home 😳.


The Threshers walked it off for the win by scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth ! Luis Garcia walked and went to third base on a double by Casey Martin. DJ Stewart singled to score Garcia. Abrahan Gutierrez singled to score Martin. Hunter Markwardt provided the heroics with a double to score both Stewart and Gutierrez 🤓.


On The Hill :


LH Jordi Martinez - 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K - 28 pitches - 14 strikes - was lifted due to pitch count - FB was flying in the 93-96 range ... just has to find the zone - exciting arm


LH JP Woodward - 2 1/3 perfect innings - seven up, seven down - 5 K’s - release point on his pitches appears way out front - jumps on the hitter , great deception - a lot of swings and misses - FB 91-92 mph, Slider - 80-82 mph - 5 swings and misses, Change Up - 83-85 mph


RH Rodolfo Sanchez - 2 1/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K’s - 44 pitches - 28 strikes - FB in the 93-94 mph range, Slider ( 83-84 ) and curve ball, change up. The slider was outstanding pitch with 8 swings and misses. - strong stuff 👍


LH Tyler Adams - two inherited runners scored - 1 2/3 IP - 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K


RH Aidan Anderson - season debut - 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP - 21 pitches - 14 strikes - FB sat 92-93 mph, also threw a slider and curve ball - good first outing.


At Bat :


1B DJ Stewart had two hits and a RBI. LF Hunter Markwardt doubled and had two RBIs including the game winner. SS Casey Martin doubled and scored a run. 2B Luis Garcia had a hit and walk in four plate appearances ... he’s now hitting .382 over five games played.


Notes :


Before the game RHP Aidan Anderson was added to the Threshers roster, RHP Alejandro Made was sent to extended spring camp.
