Player Development Center Training - Carpenter Complex

Eleven pitchers threw side bullpen sessions this morning, we watched lefty Jhordany Mezquita’s.  He threw about 25 pitches, good movement and pop, Jhordany has really added a great deal of muscle and strength during his rehab training, he was topping out at 94 mph before he had TJ surgery last June, now nearly a year later he’s back in the early stages of his mound rehab effort and seemed to be around that number today, with the added strength and improved conditioning the 25 year old looks to excel when he fully returns.

Seven pitchers threw live bullpen sessions, once again we were very impressed by 20 year old right hander Micah Ottenbreit. He commanded the zone today after struggling a bit with that in last week’s session.  Velocity and mix were what stood out, he had a nice slider/curve and the fastball was darting.  I’ve said before he reminds me a lot of Andy Ashby back in the day.  Really smooth mechanics and an easy flow, minimum effort and ball has life and jump at the plate, excited to see what he can become for sure.  Another couple names to keep in mind, two right handers - Drew Garrett and Daniel Harper, both power pitchers that if able to throw strikes have the velocity to put batters away.  We saw Dominic Pipkin throw for second time today, really good mechanics, not rushed, while I don’t think he’s back full tilt yet he did let a few fly that popped the mitt, big fella who’s always been one of my favorites, he’s now 23 years old, was drafted out of high school in 2018 as a power arm, size is imposing on the hill, he’s another we eagerly await seeing back in action, when he’s on he can dominate batters.  We’ve seen Elicier Bata in a couple sessions now, large framed 19 year old at 6’3”, the right hander from Venezuela has some energy on his pitches, has been consistent within the zone both times we’ve seen him, there’s hints of higher velocity from his arm action, it’s got a look of getting on hitters quickly, will definitely be interested in his progress.

Extended Spring Training Game @ Blue Jays Complex - Dunedin, FL :

Phillies 7 (12-5-5) Blue Jays 5

William Bergolla finished extended spring training with a bang going 3 for 3 with a walk, he scored twice and had an RBI. Dakota Kotowski had two hits including a home run and two RBIs, when the big fella hits em they go a long way.  Marco Soto doubled and walked in four plate appearances and scored a run. Yhoswar Garcia and Yemal Flores singled, the team had eight hits and six walks.

Zach Haake started and pitched three innings, three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk, he yielded a home run.  Daniel Mejia went three scoreless, two hits, four walks, one strikeout.  Mitch Neunborn tossed a perfect frame, one strikeout.  Eiberson Castellano threw an inning, two runs, one hit, one walk, three strikeouts.  Nicoly Pina closed with a scoreless frame, no hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

Tomorrow marks the end of extended spring training camp, Florida Complex League games start on Monday. I’ll post a preview article on Sunday.
