6/27/22 : Week Twelve Minor League Review ( 6/20 to 6/26 )

Position Players of the Week :

UTL Dalton Guthrie - had an outstanding week going 10 for 20 ( .500 )- he was 7 for 9 with 3 home runs and 8 RBIs in his last two games of the week ( Saturday & Sunday ). Dalton drove in 10 runs during the week. The versatile 26 year old ( drafted 6th round of 2017 draft - Florida ) has played six defensive positions this season ( 2B,SS, 3B, LF, CF, RF ) and has provided LHV solid play all season long - he’s hitting .283 for the year in 159 AB’s

1B Darick Hall was 10 for 28 ( .357 ) with three doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs. He’s riding a seven game hitting streak during which he’s 13 for 31 ( .419 ). Darick has 19 home runs for the season and 66 RBIs and is hitting a very solid .270 with a .348 OBP in 71 games ( 274 AB’s ). He’s also been very good defensively at first base. Replacing an MLB MVP in the order is impossible but perhaps a guy who’s on pace to win a AAA MVP award just might fill some of the void - just saying 😎.

Pitchers of the Week :

LH Bailey Falter - Lehigh Valley - 6/25 - continues to excel at the AAA level - 6 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 5 K’s - 76 pitches - 50 strikes - retired 16 batters in order to end his outing. For the season with the Iron Pigs he’s now 4-0 in 6 starts ( 29 1/3 IP ) with a stellar 1.53 ERA and 0.58 WHIP. He’s recorded 33 K’s ( 10.13 K/9 ) and walked just 3 batters ( 0.92 BB/9 ). Including his 7 game appearances in the major leagues this season Bailey has totaled 49 1/3 IP and has an overall 2.73 ERA with 46 K’s and 9 walks. The 25 year old who was drafted in the 5th round of the 2015 draft is a major leaguer at the beckoned call when needed, he’s deserving of a full time role in the show in the near future, even now he would be there with many other organizations.

RH Matt Russell -Jersey Shore - on Tuesday, 6/21 - threw 6 scoreless innings allowing 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3 batters - 80 pitches - 52 strikes ( 65 % ) - including throwing five innings on 6/14 in the completion of a suspended game from May 1st against Aberdeen ( which he started and threw three innings ) Matt ( 23 years old ) has pitched in 3 games this month totaling 17 IP and has allowed 3 runs on 16 hits and 5 walks while striking out 14 batters. His ERA for the month is 1.59. He was signed as an un-drafted free agent on 7/21/21 out of Missouri State University - Has a full arsenal of deliveries ( four seam, sinker, slider, cutter, change up and curve ) and sometimes uses a delayed delivery as deception. The fastball generally sits 93-96 mph, can go higher. In college over 36 appearances he made just 13 starts but this season he’s primarily been a starting pitcher for the Blue Claws.

RH Griff McGarry - Jersey Shore - was outstanding on Wednesday, 6/22 - 5 1/3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 13 K’s - 101 pitches - 63 strikes ( 62 % ). He was dominant thru five innings till he tired in the sixth - at one point he struck out 8 consecutive hitters. His fastball was consistently in the 94-97 range and flashed 98 mph plus he commanded the slider -made a lot of “pitcher’s pitches” - on the corners in un-hit-able spots with big time movement. Best we’ve seen pitch. The 23 year old was the club’s 5th round draft selection in the 2021 draft from the University of Virginia. In 22 1/3 June innings pitched he’s recorded a whopping 37 strikeouts against 10 walks in four starts. In each contest he’s pitched at least five innings. Many scouts we’ve chatted with consider him to have the best pure stuff not only in the Phillies minor league organization but in the entirety of the Minor Leagues 😳.

Other Position Player standouts :

Lehigh Valley :

OF Dustin Peterson was 9 for 22 ( .409 ) with 2 doubles, 2 home runs and 8 RBIs. The 27 year old acquired in a trade with the Brewers on April 19th has 7 home runs and 29 RBIs since joining Lehigh Valley.

OF Mickey Moniak was 9 for 24 ( .375 ) for the week with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs. He was recalled to the major leagues on Sunday in light of the Bryce Harper injury. Since being optioned back to LHV on June 14th Mickey appeared in 11 games and went 15 for 48 ( .313 ) with 5 doubles, 3 home runs and 4 RBIs out of the leadoff spot in the order.

3B Will Toffey was 6 for 17 ( .353 ) with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs and played outstanding defensively at third base. The 27 year old was acquired from the San Francisco Giants in the Luke Williams trade on March 27th.

Reading :

OF Jhailyn Ortiz went 7 for 23 ( .304 ) for the week. The 23 year old has a hit in six of his last seven games played and now has 12 home runs and 27 RBIs for the season. Last season he exploded in July hitting 13 home runs during the month - with only a few days left in June this past week might be a precursor for another hot July coming.

1B Josh Ockimey was 6 for 21 but also drew 6 walks for an OBP of .444 for the week. In the month of June he’s posted a .370 OBP in 81 plate appearances. The 26 year old signed as a minor league free agent this off season from the Boston Red Sox organization. He’s recorded a .400 OBP for the season in 63 games played ( 260 PA’s ).

1B/OF Aldrem Corredor was 7 for 22 ( .318 ) for the week. The 26 year old signed as a minor league free agent this off season has provided both leadership and stability to the Reading order. He’s highly regarded by teammates and coaches for his approach and willingness to adapt to whatever the club needs him to do.

IF Kevin Vicuna went 5 for 15 ( .333 ) with a double, home run and two RBIs. He was 3 for 4 in Sunday’s series finale. Kevin signed as a minor league free agent this off-season coming over from the Blue Jays organization. We met him during his rehab stint earlier this season in Clearwater at the Complex. The 24 year old is a solid defender at either shortstop or second base.

Jersey Shore :

3B/1B DJ Stewart was 7 for 24 for the week with 2 doubles, a home run and 3 RBIs. The 23 year old is hitting a very solid .272 for the month of June in 81 AB’s with 4 doubles, 4 home runs and 11 RBIs.

Clearwater :

OF Leandro Pineda was 7 for 24 for the week with 2 doubles and 6 RBIs. He’s riding a seven game hitting streak in which he’s 10 for 27 ( .370 ). The 20 year old from Valencia, Venezuela started the season in extended spring training but since his promotion to the Threshers on May 18th has done a nice job both offensively and defensively. Good looking player.

OF Wilfredo Flores went 6 for 18 ( .333 ) for the week and continues to provide spark to the Threshers lineup. The 22 year old is hitting a very respectable .270 for the season in 168 AB’s. He’s become in essence the everyday center fielder for the ball club,

FCL Phillies :

C Rickardo Perez was 5 for 9 ( .555 ) in three games played during the week. The 18 year old from Valencia, VZ has a hit in 4 of the 5 games he’s played in going 6 for 15 ( .400 ) with 5 RBIs. He hits from the left side, quick hands and line drive type swing.

DSL Phillies Red :

OF Jerffson Pena was 4 for 13 ( .308 ) during the week with a triple, home run and three RBIs. His OBP for the week was .437. The 18 year old from Montecristi, Dominican Republic was signed on November 16th, 2021 and is slashing .293/.383/.463 in 14 games ( 47 PA’s ) in his initial pro season to date.

DSL Phillies White :

OF Manolfi Jimenez went 7 for 16 ( .438 ) with a double and 3 RBIs. The 17 year old from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic was signed on 1/15/22 and is slashing .302/.362/.358 in 15 games ( 58 PA’s ) in his first pro season thus far.

OF Jorge Garcia was 8 for 17 ( .471 ) for the week with a double and 4 RBIs. He also drew 3 walks for an OBP of .550. The 18 year old from Penonome, Panama was signed on 2/21/21 and is slashing .356/.455/.422 in 15 games this season in 51 plate appearances.
