6/3/23 : Minor League Roundup


International League ( AAA ) -  Lehigh Valley 8 (28-27) Scranton Wilkes Barre 6 (27-29)

Allentown, PA - Coca-Cola Park


Summary :


Jake Cave singled in the bottom of the first, went to second on a walk to Weston Wilson and scored on a single by Dustin Peterson. Jordan Qsar doubled to score two runs.


The IronPigs scored a run in the second as they loaded the bases on a single (Jhailyn Ortiz) and two walks.  A double play groundout scored the run.


SWB scored a run in the third inning on two singles and a ground out.


Weston Wilson walked in the fourth, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a sac fly by Darick Hall.


Lehigh Valley loaded the bases in the 5th inning on a single and two walks, Jake Cave doubled to score two runs.


SWB scored a run in the sixth on a walk and RBI double by Ben Rortvedt.  Another walk and single loaded the bases, Billy McKinney then hit a grand slam.


Weston Wilson singled in the 8th, stole second and scored on a single by Dustin Peterson.


On the Hill :


Jesus Cruz was the opener, he went two and two third innings. Trey Cobb retired the only batter he faced to end the third inning.

Jose Alvarado pitched a scoreless inning, one hit, one hit batter and one strikeout.  David Parkinson served as the bulk reliever going four innings.  Jacob Barnes closed it with a scoreless ninth, one hit, two strikeouts.


At the Bat :


Jake Cave had two hits including a double and two RBIs.  Dustin Peterson had two hits and two RBIs.  Jordan Qsar doubled and walked three times, he also had two RBIs, Weston Wilson and Scott Kingery each walked three times.  The IronPigs walked 12 times in the game.


Defensive Notes :


Jhailyn Ortiz played first base for the first time in his professional career.  Left fielder Dustin Peterson robbed a home run in the 8th inning climbing the fence to bring one back.

Summary :


New Hampshire scored a run in the third, Zac Cook singled, went to second on a sac bunt, stole third base and crossed the plate on a ground out.


A bases loaded walk to Max McDowell scored a run for Reading in the 4th inning.


New Hampshire scored a run in the fifth inning on a double, single and ground out.


On the Hill :


Josh Hendrickson had another strong outing, five and two third innings, two runs, eight hits, no walks and three strikeouts.  Matt Seelinger pitched one and two third scoreless innings.  Braden Zarbnisky pitched a perfect inning.


At the Bat :


Nick Podkul had two hits, Oliver Dunn and Max McDowell each walked twice, Dunn also singled.  The club was held to five hits.



Did Ya Know?


Matthew Kroon’s five runs scored Thursday was the first time an R-Phil’s done that since Nick Williams on Aug. 5, 2015. The five runs are a career high for Kroon, passing his previous high of three. South Atlantic League ( High A ) - Jersey Shore (27-22) Brooklyn (21-28) - doubleheader

Lakewood, NJ - ShoreTown Ballpark


Game One : Jersey Shore 3 Brooklyn 2 - 8 innings


Summary :


In the third inning Jared Carr singled, went to second on a wild pitch, to third on a ground out to the the right side of the infield by Nick Ward and scored on a sac fly by Marcus Lee Sang.  Perfectly executed situational hitting - all the batting instructors in the system should be very proud 🤓.


Brooklyn scored twice in the fifth inning on a single, double and two rbi single (Jose Mena).


Nick Ward hit a little league home run in the bottom of the fifth inning 🤓,  he put down a bunt which was fielded by the pitcher however the pitcher threw it away down the right field line, Ward kept running past second towards third, the throw to third went astray and he raced home to score!  An unearned run with two errors on the play but sure got a lot of cheers from the fans in the ballpark!


The game went into extra innings tied at two.


Rixon Wingrove walked it off in the bottom of the 8th with a double to left field to score placed runner Marcus Lee Sang!


On the Hill :


Jordan Fowler pitched very well once again - five innings, two runs, four hits, no walks, five strikeouts - at one point in the game he retired 12 batters in a row.  Tristan Garnett pitched two scoreless innings allowing just one hit. Orion Kerkering pitched a scoreless 8th inning.


At the Bat :


Rixon Wingrove was 3 for 3 with a double and a walk plus he delivered the game winning run. Casey Martin had two hits including a double. Andrik Nava doubled.



Game Two : Jersey Shore 3 Brooklyn 2


Summary :


Brooklyn scored a run in the first inning on two singles, a walk and fielding error.


Nick Ward walked in the bottom of the first and scored on a double by Rixon Wingrove.


Nick Ward walked in the third, advanced on a single by Rixon Wingrove and scored on a single by Andrik Nava.


Casey Martin singled in the 6th, stole second and scored on a single by Jared Carr.


Brooklyn scored a run in the 7th on two singles and two ground out advancements.


On the Hill :


Rodolfo Sanchez opened and went two innings, one unearned run.  Jason Ruffcorn pitched two scoreless frames, two hits, no walks, three strikeouts.  Matt Russell was outstanding, two scoreless/hitless innings, no walks, four strikeouts 🔥. Tommy McCollum closed it out by pitching the final inning earning his 4th save of the year.


At the Bat :


Rixon Wingrove had two hits including a double.  Jared Carr had two hits.  Nick Ward walked twice and scored two runs.

Summary :


Justin Crawford tripled to lead off the bottom of the first inning, he scored on a sac fly by Bryan Rincon.


Justin Crawford singled in the third inning, stole second base and then scored on a single by Gabriel Rincones Jr.


Chad Castillo singled in the 4th, advanced to third on two ground outs and scored on a single by Erick Brito.


Three singles scored a run in the sixth inning for Dunedin.


Dunedin scored two unearned runs in the 8th on a walk, two singles, passed ball and fielding error.


Gabriel Rincones Jr singled in the bottom of the 8th, stole second base (20th of season), went to third on a throwing error and scored on a sac fly by Chad Castillo.


On the Hill :


Alex McFarlane was really good, six innings, one run, five hits, one walk, six strikeouts.  Sinkers averaged 96 mph, he threw them 60 % of the time with his slider (average of 84 mph) thrown 33 % of the time.  Danny Wilkinson threw a scoreless inning, one hit, one strikeout. Wesley Moore finished it out going one and one third, no runs, one hit, two strikeouts.


At the Bat :


Gabriel Rincones Jr hit three singles.  Justin Crawford had two hits including a triple.
