Also, when outhitting an opponent, Reading is 17-8, compared to 3-18 when being outhit.” - from Media notes supplied by Jake Starr - Fightins Media Relations and Press Box Manager

Florida Complex League : Two Games

Game One : Phillies 3 (1-0) Blue Jays 2 (0-1) - completion of suspended game from 6/5/23

Summary :

Dakota Kotowski homered in the second inning.

The Blue Jays scored twice in the third inning, the first run crossed on three consecutive singles, the second on a wild pitch.

In the fifth inning Santiago Torres and Yhoswar Garcia singled, they both scored on a double by Pedro Martinez.

The game went into rain delay with one out in the top of the fifth inning.  It was eventually suspended, the game was completed today at Carpenter Complex at 10 AM.

Guissepe Velasquez came on to pitch for the Phillies, along with Saul Teran they combined to pitch scoreless baseball the next five innings allowing just two hits and two walks.

On the Hill :

Oswald Medina started and pitched three innings, two runs, four hits, no walks and four strikeouts.  Starlyn Castillo pitched a perfect inning and struck out the side.  Guissepe Velasquez went three innings, no runs, one hit, two walks and two strikeouts.  Saul Teran recorded his first FCL save by pitching the final two innings, no runs, one hit, no walks and one strikeout.  Teran attacks the strike zone, has good movement and zip on his pitches and shows no fear on the mound, he’s all business when he’s out there, fun to watch.

At the Bat :

Yhoswar Garcia had two hits (single & double), Dakota Kotowski had two hits (single & HR), walked, drove in a run and scored one.  Santiago Torres had two knocks, both singles.  Matt Alifano and Pedro Martinez each doubled, Martinez had two RBIs and also walked.

Game Two : Phillies 6 (2-0) Blue Jays 4 (0-2) - seven innings

Note :

It was genuinely fun to watch these games, the enthusiasm from each of the benches cheering on their teammates created an electric atmosphere.  When the Phillies scored five in the sixth inning the pitchers on the sidelines who were not in the game were exuberant in their encouragement of their teammates, the Blue Jays contingent was the same for their team on defense.  There was no unnecessary banter between the teams, just truly team spirit from each side, couldn’t help but smile and enjoy it - good stuff!

On the Hill :

Mavis Graves started and went two and two thirds, got hurt on same high breaking balls but also showed poise and moxy, he posted five strikeouts.  Mavis is an up and coming arm, the improvement from when we first saw him in the fall till now is reminiscent of how we saw Ben Brown grow into the pitcher he became, really like how Mavis goes about his work and the stuff is gonna trend upwards, one to keep in mind.  Nathan Karaffa threw the ball really well today, good slider and a sneaky fast heater, two and two thirds innings, no runs, two hits, one walk and four strikeouts.  Josh Bortka went one and one third, no runs two hits, two walks, one strikeout.  Luis Gomez stranded an inherited runner and retired the only two batters he faced, one by strikeout, came in and threw strikes.

At the Bat :

Pedro Martinez was 3 for 4 (two singles & a double) with four RBIs and a run scored.  Diego Gonzalez had two hits (single & double), Yemal Flores doubled (he’s a much more confident hitter this year) as did Jackie Pertuz in his only AB of the game.  Ezra Farmer drew two walks out of the leadoff spot in the order.

Defensive Gems :

Shortstop Pedro Martinez made a play from deep in the hole in the seventh inning to throw out a runner at first base.  Second baseman Jehisbert Sevilla made a diving snag on a hard hit grounder, got up and threw the runner out ar first base to end the game.
