The Phillies have acquired LHP Michael Plassmeyer and cash considerations from the San Francisco Giants for C Austin Wynns. Plassmeyer will be assigned to Lehigh Valley (AAA).
Plassmeyer is 25 years old and was the 4th round draft selection of the Seattle Mariners in the 2018 draft from the University of Missouri. He’s appeared in 11 games this season for AAA level Sacramento with 10 of those being starts. This the third time he’s been traded, the Mariners traded him to the Rays in 2018 and the Rays dealt him to the Giants in 2021.
He is known as a command-over-stuff pitcher, does not overpower opposing hitters as his fastball sits in the low-90’s that he pairs with a curveball and a changeup. The changeup is the better of his two secondary offerings. He’s been primarily a starter throughout his minor league career - 64 starts in 72 appearances - a 3.73 ERA in 311 2/3 IP.
Austin Wynns has arguably been the most productive hitter in the Phillies minor league system this season as he leaves leading the organization in OBP, BA and OPS. The 31 year old hit .365/.504/.500 in 33 games ( 104 AB’s ) with the Iron Pigs. He will return to the major leagues with the Giants as Joey Bart has struggled thus far and has been optioned to the AAA level. Wynns will now serve as a catching tandem with Kurt Casali for the Giants.
We wish Austin well and welcome Michael to the organization from a fan’s view.
