7/11/22 : Week Fourteen Minor League Review ( 7/4 to 7/10 )

7/11/22 : Week Fourteen Minor League Review ( 7/4 to 7/10 )

Position Players of the Week :

IF/OF Dalton Guthrie - Lehigh Valley - 9 for 23 ( .391 )  - 2 doubles,  HR, 7 RBIs - he’s hitting .344/.417/.563 for the month in 8 games with 4 doubles, a home run and 8 RBIs. Just featured in my spotlight article on Saturday https://www.philliesbaseballfan.com/post/7-9-22-spotlight-series-guthrie-mckay   Dalton is having a very strong season hitting .289 in 204 AB’s and has played multiple defensive positions.

OF Johan Rojas - Reading - 9 for 25 ( .360 ) with a double, triple, home run and three RBIs. - .407 OBP for the week.   He also stole two bases.  Since being promoted to Reading from Jersey Shore on 6/30/22  he’s slashed .341/438/.512 in ten games played.  For the season Johan has 39 stolen bases in 40 attempts combined with his time at Jersey Shore.  The mercurial 21 year old continues to play stellar defense, he’s already posted two outfield assists with Reading.  Has all the defensive tools, speed, arm, range, glove and gets outstanding jumps and reads.  Offensively he uses his plus plus speed to beat out infield hits that others would not, is not shy about using the bunt as a weapon as well.  Since his promotion we’ve seen him drive the ball harder, it’s always been there - he led both the Gulf Coast League and New York Penn League in triples back in 2019.  We remember one day on the backfields that season when he was on deck waiting to hit and I was near by taking photos - he asked me if I was the Facebook guy, I acknowledged and he smiled - said I was “pretty good” 🤓.  I told him then and it’s showing now that he’s pretty good too 😁 - this week we’ve seen yet another clip of the potential this young man possesses - big league skill set.

IF Wendell Rijo - Reading - 8 for 21 ( .380 ) with 6 walks, a double and three RBIs - .518 OBP for the week - he’s hitting .346 for the month in 26 AB’s with a .486 OBP - 26 years old from the Dominican Republic signed as a minor league free agent on 12/20/21. Has played second and third base this season for the Fightin’s.

OF/1B Carlos De La Cruz - Jersey Shore - OF Carlos De La Cruz - 9 for 23 ( .391 ) with 3 doubles, a home run and three RBIs.  He’s hitting .346 for the month in 26 AB’s with a .393 OBP and .577 slugging percentage.  For the season he’s posted a solid .268 batting average in 157 AB’s with a .339 OBP.  Carlos is 22 years old and was signed as an un-drafted free agent on 8/23/17 from New York.  We were privy to see him early on in Gulf Coast League play and noted that he’s got tremendous power, when he hits it square the ball goes a long way.  Consistency has been an issue, to date this season that’s been very much improved.

Pitcher of the Week :

LH Michael Plassmeyer - Lehigh Valley  - 6 1/3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 5 K’s - 74 pitches - 56 strikes - was very efficient in his start on July 9th - retired 8 in a row at one point.  The 25 year old was acquired in a trade on 6/8/22 from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for catcher Austin Wynns.  Plassmeyer was the 4th round draft selection of the Seattle Mariners in the 2018 draft from the University of Missouri. The Mariners traded him to the Rays in 2018 and the Rays dealt him to the Giants in 2021.  He is a command-over-stuff pitcher, does not overpower opposing hitters as his fastball sits in the low-90’s that he pairs with a curveball and a changeup. The changeup is the better of his two secondary offerings.  Had it all working this  past week.
