Today at the Complex :
I stopped by to watch rehabbing right hander’s Christian McGowan and Alex Garbrick throw mid-day live BP sessions. Amongst the batters they faced were Rodolfo Castro and Gabriel Rincones Jr. It was great to see all four on the field participating in baseball competition again. Castro and Ricones Jr have very muscular builds and are huge men, intimidating hitters. Both had strong spring camps and expectations were high. A hamstring injury sidelined Castro and thumb surgery sidelined Rincones Jr. Gabriel has a full beard but vowed it was coming off later this week. I think that folks who underestimate the value that each bring to the organization are going to be surprised.
From my perspective both pitchers threw the ball well today, each was limited to fifteen pitches or so. Christian had really good life on his fastball and threw an off-speed delivery that froze the hitter. It was his first live BP by my count so there’s still a ways to go to return to game action. Alex has thrown I think four live BP’s now - progressing, mixed pitches today, the second time I’ve watched one of his sessions.
I really get a kick out of how the other pitchers in rehab camp gather behind the plate to watch their teammates. It’s cool that they all acknowledge me by name as well, very humbled in that regard. This group gets along very well, today they were debating whether Babe Ruth would hit modern day pitching 🤓. Btw limited side sessions were also thrown today by Alex McFarlane, Andrew Painter and Guissepe Velasquez. That’s a lot of talent on its way back.
RHP Spencer Turnbull is here as well, got to chat with him a bit as we were walking out of the complex.
