7/23/23 : Week Sixteen Minor League Review (7/17 to 7/23)


The seven teams went 22-16 for the week. They are a cumulative 253-204 for a winning percentage of .554 which is currently the second highest winning mark for the 2023 season in minor league baseball for all thirty organizations. The four affiliates participating in split seasons are 50-38 (.568) in the second half.


Lehigh Valley won five of six in Toledo as Weston Wilson was a wrecking ball (8 for 19 (.421) with a double, three home runs, three RBIs, two walks, .500 OBP), he’s now posted 23 home runs for the season. Nick Nelson pitched seven quality innings in his weekly start, TJ Zeuch made two starts accumulating twelve and a third innings.  Seranthony Dominguez pitched two scoreless frames in two appearances and Tyler McKay continues to shine, now up a level from Reading.


Reading got a great pitching performance from Griff McGarry ( seven innings, no runs, three hits, no walks, ten strikeouts) and strong starts by Mick Abel, Zach Haake and Tyler Philips.


Nick Ward had an outstanding week for Jersey Shore (10 for 23 (.435) with two doubles, home run, four walks, eight RBIs, two stolen bases and four runs - .517 OBP) as did Marcus Lee Sang (9 for 26 (.346) with a double, triple, four RBIs, five walks, seven runs scored - .462 OBP) as the club slugged it out with Winston-Salem to spilt six games.


Clearwater took it to Tampa in Thresherville getting contributions from multiple players and spinning two shutouts in their four wins during the week.


Dakota Kotowski (412 OBP in 17 PA’s - four hits, three walks, two home runs, four RBIs) continues to hammer the ball on the backfields for the FCL Phillies and Kendall Simmons finished up his rehab there before rejoining Jersey Shore - he went 6 for 17 (.352) combined for the week with two doubles and a home run.


The DSL Phillies White team pitched their second seven inning no-hitter of the month on Tuesday as Alexis De La Cruz went four innings and Kleyderve Andrade went three innings. They combined for ten strikeouts.

Thursday : Weston Wilson had three hits (two singles & HR) and a walk.  Rafael Marchan had three hits (singles).  Jake Cave and Scott Kingery each had two hits (single & double).


Friday : Aramis Garcia had three hits (two singles & a double).  Weston Wilson doubled.


Saturday : Darick Hall, Rafael Marchan, Esteban Quiroz and Simon Muzziotti each had two hits, Hall also walked.  Kody Clemens hit a three run home run. Esteban Quiroz and Rafael Marchan doubled.


Sunday : Jordan Qsar had three hits (two doubles & single).  Kody Clemens doubled and homered, three RBIs, he also walked onceb. Aramis Garcia had two hits and two RBIs.  Cal Stevenson had two hits (single & double).

Tuesday : TJ Zeuch had an excellent outing - seven innings, one run, four hits, no walks, three strikeouts. Luis Ortiz pitched one and two third scoreless innings to finish it, one hit, no walks, two strikeouts.


Wednesday : Nick Nelson was very good, he went seven innings, one run, six hits, three walks, five strikeouts.  In his four July appearances Nick has pitched 18 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on fourteen hits with eight walks and fifteen strikeouts - he’s posted a 1.96 ERA for the month.  Jesus Cruz pitched a scoreless inning, no hits, one walk, one strikeout.  Tyler McKay finished it with a scoreless ninth inning, one hit allowed.


Thursday : Drew Hutchinson pitched six innings, one run, three hits, two walks, eight strikeouts.  Taylor Lehman, Ben Bowden and Connor Brogdon each threw an inning to close it out.


Friday : In his IronPigs debut Shaun Anderson went two innings plus one batter - one run, two hits, no walks, two strikeouts.  Seranthony Dominguez pitched a scoreless inning, one walk, two strikeouts.  Noah Skirrow pitched four innings, one run, three hits, two walks, six strikeouts.


Saturday : Bailey Falter pitched four innings, one run,three hits, three walks, three strikeouts.  Noah Song (fastball 90-94 mph) pitched two innings, one run, two hits, one walk, three strikeouts, he threw a sinker, slider, four seamer, changeup and curve ball.


Sunday : TJ Zeuch went five and two third innings, two runs, five hits, four walks, two strikeouts.  Tyler McKay pitched one and one third innings, no runs, no hits, one walk, one strikeout. Seranthony Dominguez struck out the side in a perfect 8th inning, his fastball averaged 97 mph.  Connor Brogdon closed it with a perfect inning, two strikeouts.


AA Level : Reading : 3-3 for the week against Altoona, 10-10, 38-50 overall - 7/25/23 vs Binghamton

Thursday : Mick Abel had a strong outing, five innings, no runs, two hits, three walks and three strikeouts.  Carlos Francisco struggled, three runs on three hits and two walks in two thirds of an inning.  Cristian Hernandez went an inning and a third, no runs or hits, one walk.  Dominic Pipkin pitched an inning, one run, two hits, one strikeout.


Friday : Griff McGarry was excellent - seven innings, no runs, three hits, no walks, ten strikeouts.  He threw 95 pitches, 68 for strikes.  Had a really good mix, slider was thrown a lot and was a weapon.  It’s the first time in his pro career that he’s pitched seven innings - in his three July starts he’s now pitched 17 1/3 innings, three runs allowed (1.56 ERA) on six hits with twenty five strikeouts 👀🔥.   Brett Schulze struck out the side in the 8th inning inheriting a bases loaded jam and stranding three runners. Orion Kerkering pitched the ninth to close it, one run on two hits, threw a lot of sliders but popped a 97 mph fastball on the last hitter.


Saturday : David Parkinson went five innings, one run, four hits, four walks, three strikeouts.  Keylan Killgore retired all five batters he faced, three by strikeout. Braden Zarbnisky pitched one and one third innings, no runs, two hits, one walk, one strikeout. Brett Schulze earned his sixth save with a scoreless ninth inning, one hit, two walks.


Sunday : Zach Haake went five innings, no runs, three hits, no walks, three strikeouts.  In his last two starts he’s pitched ten scoreless innings, five hits, no walks and eight strikeouts. Carlos Francisco pitched a perfect sixth inning. Dominic Pipkin pitched an inning, one run, two hits, one walk, two strikeouts.  Cristian Hernandez threw a perfect inning, one strikeout.

Thursday : Nick Ward had four hits (two singles & two doubles).  Erick Brito and Marcus Lee Sang had three hits apiece.  Rixon Wingrove doubled. Lee Sang and Gabriel Rincones Jr tripled and Anthony Quirion and Hao Yu Lee homered.  Wilfredo Flores had two hits.


Friday : Hao Yu Lee had four hits (two singles & two doubles). Leandro Pineda had two knocks (single & double). Marcus Lee Sang and Rixon Wingrove each doubled.  Wingrove also walked twice and had two RBIs.  Lee Sang walked three times and scored three runs.


Saturday : Marcus Lee Sang had two hits, Leandro Pineda homered and Rixon Wingrove doubled.


Sunday : Kendall Simmons had two hits (double & HR) and a walk.  Andrick Nava had two hits (single, double), scored twice and drove in two runs.  Nick Ward homered and walked posting three RBIs.

Tuesday : Bryan Rincon hit two doubles and had three RBIs.  Cole Moore had two hits, Otto Kemp tripled. Four players drew two walks each - Jordan Viars, Emaarion Boyd, Justin Crawford and Felix Reyes.


Wednesday : Felix Reyes had three hits (two singles and a double) and three RBIs, the big fella now has 43 RBIs in 41 games (151 AB’s).  Matt Alifano had two hits and a walk.  Jordan Viars doubled, Chad Castillo and Troy Schreffler homered, Castillo had three RBIs.


Thursday : Cole Moore, Ryan Leitch and Troy Schreffler each had two hits.  Leitch doubled.


Friday : Otto Kemp had three hits (two singles and a double).  Ricardo Rosario and William Bergolla each had two hits. Rosario doubled, Cade Fergus had two RBIs.


Sunday Game One  : Chad Castillo had three hits (single, double, HR) and two RBIs, he scored three runs.  Emaarion Boyd  had three hits (two singles. & first pro HR) and four RBIs, he reached base four times (was HBP).  Otto Kemp (two doubles), William Bergolla and Troy Schreffler each had two hits.  Ryan Leitch homered.

Wednesday : Four pitchers were used.  Josh Bortka pitched three and a third scoreless innings, no hits, one walk, six strikeouts.  Braeden Fausnaught earned his first professional save by retiring the only two batters he faced to close the game, one by strikeout, he stranded two inherited runners.


Thursday : Jean Cabrera pitched six shutout innings, seven hits, one walk, five strikeouts. Daniel Harper pitched two innings, no hits, one walk, two strikeouts.  Danny Wilkinson finished the shutout by pitching the ninth, one hit, one strikeout. The game was completed in one hour and 58 minutes.


Friday : Jonathan Petit went five innings, no runs, two hits, two walks, five strikeouts.  Seth Nightingale pitched an inning, one walk, one strikeout.  Andrew Walling completed the shutout - three innings, one hit, two walks, one strikeout.


Sunday Game One  : Estibenzon Jimenez pitched four innings, one run, six hits, no walks, two strikeouts.  Eiberson Castellano pitched an inning, one run, two hits, one walk, one strikeout.  Wen-Hui Pan finished, two innings, one run, one hit, no walks, two strikeouts.

Thursday : Yhoswar Garcia had three hits (two doubles and a single), he scored twice and had an RBI.  Raylin Heredia and Dakota Kotowski each had two hits.  Kotowski, Kendall Simmons, Jorge Mendez, Diego  Gonzalez and Raylin Heredia each doubled. Mendez had three RBIs.


Friday : Raylin Heredia had two of the team’s six hits. Leonardo Rondon’s double was the only extra base knock.


Saturday : Marco Soto and Jorge Mendez doubled, Dakota Kotowski hit his 11th home run of the season.

Monday : Starlyn Castillo had a strong outing, five innings, no runs, two hits, two walks and three strikeouts.  Jose Pena Jr yielded a run on one hit and three walks while striking out two in an inning of work.  Ezequiel Ventura threw two scoreless innings, two hits, no walks, three strikeouts.  Luis Gomez was tagged for two runs on two hits and a walk in one inning pitched.


Thursday : Mavis Graves went three and two third innings, two runs, three hits, two walks and six strikeouts.  Giussepe Velasquez pitched two and a third scoreless innings, no hits, one walk, three strikeouts.  Drew Garrett, Luis Alcala and Saul Teran each threw a scoreless frame.


Friday : Enrique Segura had his best outing of the year, the talented 18 year old right hander went five scoreless innings, two hits, two walks and five strikeouts.  Yoniel Ramirez pitched one and one third scoreless innings in relief.


Saturday : Christian McGowan made his first game appearance since April 17th of 2022.  Christian is returning from TJ surgery and threw the baseball very well today - two perfect innings with one strikeout, the only hard hit ball was a drive to right center field that fleet footed center fielder Santiago Torres ran down.  His fastball range was 95 to 97 mph offset by a slider in the 84 to 88 mph range - good stuff!    Daniel Mejia went four innings, two runs, three hits, three walks, two strikeouts.  Javier Fuenmayor pitched two scoreless innings, four hits, one strikeout. Luis Gomez finished it with a scoreless ninth inning, one hit allowed - first baseman Dakota Kotowski made a diving stop on a hard grounder, get up and step on the bag to end the game.

Friday :  Luis Gonzalez went five innings, one run, four hits, one walk, three strikeouts.  Pedro Peralta pitched an inning, one run, two hits, two walks.  Claudio Gatier finished with a scoreless frame, one strikeout.

Thursday : Three pitchers were used, Luis Avila pitched three innings, no runs, one hit, no walks, five strikeouts.  John Sosa pitched two innings, no hits, one walk, two strikeouts.


Friday : Maxwell Hernandez went five innings, one hit, two walks, six strikeouts.  Jendry Charles completed the shutout with two innings of work, one hit, two walks.


Saturday : Angel Liranzo started and went four innings, two runs, four hits, no walks, five strikeouts.  Pedro Reyes pitched a perfect inning, one strikeout.  Carlos Millan pitched two innings, no runs, one hit, no walks, three strikeouts.
