7/28/23 : Minor League Roundup


International League ( AAA ) - Lehigh Valley (14-10, 50-47) Syracuse (9-15, 42-56) - doubleheader

Allentown, PA - Coca-Cola Park


Game One :  Syracuse 9 Lehigh Valley 6


Completion of suspended game from 7/27


Summary :


Drew Ellis doubled in the second inning and scored on a single by Esteban Quiroz.


Simon Muzziotti tripled in the third inning and scored on a sac fly by Weston Wilson.


Luke Voit homered for Syracuse in the fourth inning. A walk and two singles scored another run.


The game went into rain delay in the top of the 5th inning at around 8:30 PM.  It was suspended at 9:20 PM and will be completed tomorrow with the score knotted at 2-2


Before the game was halted Syracuse had loaded the bases on two hits and a walk, there was one out.


The game resumed today at this point.


Andrew Bellatti took the mound to resume the game in the fifth inning .  A walk and hit batter forced two Syracuse runs across the plate.


Syracuse scored three runs in the sixth on an Abraham Almonte home run.


Jordan Qsar walked in the sixth, moved to second on a ground ball and scored on a single by Dustin Peterson.  Scott Kingery doubled to score Peterson, Simon Muzziotti walked, Weston Wilson singled to score Kingery and send Muzziotti to third.  A double steal scored Muzziotti and put Wilson on second base.


Syracuse scored two in the 8th inning on four singles and a sac fly.  One of the singles was a ball hit off the center field wall by Luke Voit however he only got to first as he watched it’s flight from the batters box anticipating the ball would leave the yard 😳.


On the Hill :


Shaun Anderson started, three innings, two runs, five hits, one walk, two strikeouts. Brett Schulze made his AAA debut, one inning, no runs, one hit, two strikeouts - one inherited runner scored.  Braden Zarbnisky went 2/3 of an inning, two runs, two hits, one walk.  Andrew Bellatti pitched an inning, no runs, one walk, one hit batter, two strikeouts - two inherited runners scored.  Noah Skirrow went three innings, five runs, six hits, four walks.  Taylor Lehman pitched a perfect inning, two strikeouts.


At the Bat :


Simon Muzziotti, Darick Hall and Dustin Peterson each had two hits.  Muzziotti tripled, Drew Ellis and Scott Kingery doubled.



Game Two :  Syracuse 6 Lehigh Valley 3


Summary :


Luke Voit hit a two run home run for Syracuse in the fourth inning.


Jim Haley homered in the fifth inning.


A walk, two singles and an error scored two runs for Syracuse in the 6th inning.


Darick Hall singled in the 6th, Rafael Marchan walked. Nick Podkul was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Nick was hit in the face by the pitch, he had to leave the game immediately, walked off with the help of the trainer, seemed to have hit him in the nose. Simon Muzziotti ran for him.  Cal Stevenson walked to score a run.  Jim Haley hit a fly ball to short right field on which a run scored.


Abraham Almonte hit a two run home run for Syracuse in the seventh inning.


On the Hill :


Bailey Falter pitched four innings, two runs, three hits, three walks, five strikeouts.  Tyler McKay pitched a scoreless inning, one hit, no walks, two strikeouts.  Ben Bowden went an inning, two runs - one earned, two hits, two walks, two strikeouts.  Connor Brogdon pitched an inning, two runs, three hits, one walk, one strikeout.


At the Bat :


Darick Hall, Weston Wilson and Cal Stevenson each had two hits.  Wilson and Nick Podkul doubled, Jim Haley homered.



Eastern League ( AA) - Binghamton 3 (10-14, 45-48) Reading 2 (11-13, 39-53)

Reading, PA - FirstEnergy Stadium


Summary :


Joe Suozzi hit a home run for Binghamton in the second inning.


Binghamton loaded the bases in the third inning on two walks and a hit batter, a sac fly scored a run and another run scored on a throwing error.


The game went into rain delay in the middle of the sixth inning.  The game resumed at 9:50 PM


Ethan Wilson homered in the 6th inning.  Pedro Martinez homered in the seventh inning.


On the Hill :


Griff McGarry pitched five innings,  three runs - two earned, one hit, four walks, seven strikeouts - 88 pitches - 51 strikes.  Dominic Pipkin threw a scoreless inning, no hits, one walk, two strikeouts.  Cristian Hernandez pitched an inning and two thirds, no runs, no hits, three walks, two strikeouts.  Carlos Francisco stranded three inherited base runners in the 8th inning, he retired all four batters he faced, one strikeout.  Reading pitchers allowed just one hit in the game.


At the Bat :


Ethan Wilson had two hits (single & HR), Matt Kroon had two hits.  Pedro Martinez homered.


Defensive Gem :


Left fielder Baron Radcliff made a great running catch slamming against the wall in foul territory to end the seventh inning. 👏👀


Notes :


Carrot has dominated the 5th inning vegetable race as of late - another win tonight 👀



South Atlantic League ( High A ) - Jersey Shore 8 (13-15, 48-45) Aberdeen 1 (17-10, 49-42)

Summary :


Maxwell Costes hit a home run for Aberdeen in the second inning.


Jared Carr walked in the second inning, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Hao Yu Lee.


Kendall Simmons and Nick Ward were hit by pitches in the third inning, they both scored on a single by Leandro Pineda.  Arturo DeFreitas doubled to score Pineda.


Hao Yu Lee reached on a fielding error in the fourth inning, he scored on a double by Kendall Simmons.


Nick Ward singled in the 8th inning and scored on a triple by Leandro Pineda.  Jared Carr reached on an error, Hao Yu Lee walked.  Marcus Lee Sang singled to score Carr.  Kendall Simmons singled to score Lee.


On the Hill :


Matt Osterberg was very good, seven innings, one run, five hits, two walks, four strikeouts - 91 pitches - 67 strikes.  Malik Binns pitched a perfect 8th inning.  Rodolfo Sanchez struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning.


At the Bat :


Leandro Pineda had two hits (single & triple) and three RBIs. Marcus Lee Sang and Kendall Simmons  each had two hits (single & double) and Arturo DeFreitas doubled.

Summary :


Ty Penner hit a home run in the second inning.  Albert Rodriquez hit a homer in the third inning.


The Blue Jays score twice in the bottom of the second on a double, hit batter and double steal.


Diego Gonzalez homered in the 4th inning scoring Lou Helmig (singled) and Ty Penner (walked) ahead of him.


Jonathan Peguero hit a two run home run for the Blue Jays in the seventh inning.


On the Hill :


Christian McGowan went three innings in his second rehab start, three innings, two runs, two hits, no walks and five strikeouts, he retired the first six batters faced in order.  Enrique Segura went four innings, two runs, five hits, two walks, three strikeouts. Javier Fuenmayor finished, two innings, no runs or hits, three walks, two strikeouts - he picked a runner off at first to end the game.


At the Bat :


Ty Penner, Albert Rodriquez and Diego Gonzalez hit home runs, Gonzalez had three RBIs.



Dominican Summer League :


Phillies Red 7 (21-17) Mets Blue 1 (16-21) - seven innings

Summary :


Juan Villavicencio doubled in the first inning and scored on a double by Eduardo Tait.  Jaeden Calderon doubled to score Tait. Isaac Ramirez singled to score Calderon.


Fernando Hernandez and Victor Cardoza were hit by pitches in the second inning, they both scored on a double by Eduardo Tait.


Andres Hernandez walked in the sixth, advanced to third on two wild pitches and scored on a ground out by Jean Leanez.


Esterling Rodriguez walked in the seventh, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a groundout by Jaeden Calderon.


On the Hill :


Adilson Peralta went five innings, no runs, one hit, five walks, three strikeouts. Enderson Jean pitched two innings, one run, one hit, two walks, one strikeout.


At the Bat :


Eduardo Tait hit two doubles and posted three RBIs, he scored once.  Juan Villavicencioand Jaeden Calderon each doubled.



Phillies White 3 (29-8) Angels 2 (29-10)

Summary :


Jerffson Pena singled in the first inning, advanced to third base on walks to Aroon Escobar and Angel Mata and scored on a single by Yemil Rosario.


The Angels scored a run in the second on two singles and a wild pitch.


Jarol Martinez reached on an error in the eighth, advanced to third on a single by Jerffson Pena and scored on a single by Angel Mata.  Pena also scored on the play due to a throwing error by the Angels first baseman.


A single, double and ground out scored a run for the Angels in the ninth.


On the Hill :


Maxwel Hernandez pitched five innings, one run, five hits, no walks, two strikeouts.  Pedro Reyes pitched an inning, one run, no hits, one walk.  Angel Liranzo went two innings, no runs, two hits, one walk, two strikeouts.  Carlos Millan finished, one inning, one run, two hits, no walks, one strikeout.


At the Bat :


Jerffson Pena had two of the teams four hits (all singles).



Player Development Center Training - Carpenter Complex


Congrats to Sarah Edwards and Beth Greenwood for earning roster spots on the Team USA Women’s baseball team which will compete at the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup group stage in Thunder Bay, Ontario, from August 8-13.  Both will be making their first appearance on the Women's National Team.  Edwards is listed on the roster as a LHP/INF and Greenwood as a C/UTL.  Team USA is slated to play Australia, Korea, Canada, Mexico, and China in the Group A tournament.   Cuba, France, Japan, Puerto Rico, Chinese Taipei and Venezuela form group B, they will meet in Japan from September 13th to the 18th.  Two teams from each grouping plus two wild cards will advance to the World Cup Finals to be held in 2024. Japan is the six-time defending world champions, they have a 30-game winning streak that started in 2010.


Edwards is a Hitting Development Coach for the Phillies based at Carpenter Complex and Greenwood is a Research and Development Fellow, also based at Carpenter Complex.
