8/15/22 : Week Nineteen Minor League Review ( 8/8 to 8/14 )

Justin Crawford & Emaarion Boyd both sprinted to strong starts their first week - see below - FCL Phillies - photo by Mark Wylie

Position Players of the Week :

IF Hao Yu Lee - Clearwater - 11 for 25 ( .440 ) including two doubles and seven RBIs.  He’s in the midst of a seven game hitting streak ( 13 for 30 - .433 with 9 RBIs ).  The 19 year old from New Taipei, Taiwan is hitting .385 ( 15 for 39 ) for the month of August.  Lee missed the entire month of June and the first eleven days of July as he recovered from a fractured hand suffered when hit by a pitch. We’ve long touted him as a “professional hitter” on this site and he’s continued to impress in that pattern since returning from the injury.  For the season he’s posted a .397 OBP in 277 plate appearances along with a .300 batting average and has 12 doubles, 8 home runs and 49 RBIs.  I’ve often used a Placido Polanco comparison - will stand by that - exciting and very good young player.

OF Santiago Torres - DSL Phillies Red - 8 for 18 ( .444 ) including the stats ( 4 for 6 ) from the completion of 7/21 game played Wednesday - hit a double and three triples during the week - ( there was a fourth triple added to his season totals - it occurred in the first inning on 7/21 ).  Santiago is 19 years old from Barquisimeto, VZ and was signed 7/12/21 - overall stats aren’t great so far but he had a really good week this week 👍

OF Baron Radcliff - Jersey Shore - 7 for 17 ( .412 ) with a double, three home runs and seven RBIs. He’s hitting .353 ( 12 for 34 ) in the month of August and has driven in 11 runs.  2020 5th round draft selection from Georgia Tech University - now has 11 home runs for the season.

Pitchers of the Week :

RH Andrew Painter - Jersey Shore - 7 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 9 K’s - 93 pitches - 68 strikes ( 73 % ) - the 19 year old continued to dominate hitters - his combined ERA for the season now stands at 1.19 in 75 1/3 IP - he’s posted a most impressive 118 strikeouts ( an average of 14.1 K’s/9 ).  In just about equal portions his ERA at High A ( 0.98 - 36 2/3 IP ) vs Low A ( 1.40 - 38 2/3 IP ) is actually better.  Fun to watch and glad he’s on our side 🤓.   Along with Mick Abel he’s been promoted to Reading.

LH Kent Emmanuel - Lehigh Valley - 7 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 8 K’s - 80 pitches - 58 strikes ( 73 % ) - signed this off season as a waiver claim from the Astros it was known that he was coming into the spring camp nicked after incurring elbow surgery in June of 2021.  Kent spent the first half of the year rehabbing at the Complex making his initial game appearance on June 3rd for the low A Clearwater Threshers.  He was drafted by the Astros in the third round of the 2013 draft from the University of North Carolina and is now 30 years old.  From what I’ve seen he’s got a four pitch mix - is a sinker baller with the heater generally in the low 90’s and has a plus changeup that comes from the same arm slot.  His performance this week was the best of the year - struck out the first six batters he faced and retired the first ten in order.

LH Bailey Falter - Lehigh Valley - 6 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 8 K’s - 80 pitches - 62 strikes ( 78 % ) - was optioned back to AAA on August 3rd after going six strong against Pittsburgh for the Phillies on 7/29.  Bailey made another strong start this week for Lehigh Valley.  At the AAA level this season he’s 4-1 in nine games with a 1.91 ERA ( 47 IP ) and has posted a stellar 0.66 WHIP.  Overall he’s thrown 86 innings this season ( 39 in the show in 11 appearances ).

Other Position Player standouts :

Lehigh Valley :

UTL Yairo Munoz - 8 for 28 with a double, home run and four RBIs - he’s hitting .320 in 200 minor league AB’s with 6 home runs and 29 RBIs

IF Ali Castillo - 5 for 13 ( .384 ) with 2 doubles - the 33 year old veteran has had a solid season between Reading & Lehigh Valley.

OF Simon Muzziotti - 5 for 16 ( .313 ) - promoted to Lehigh Valley from Reading on August 8th the 23 year old from Cumana, VZ continued his strong month of August and conclusion to July - he’s 28 for 79 ( .354 ) since July 16th with 4 doubles, a triple, 4 home runs and 11 RBIs

Reading :

IF McCarthy Tatum - 6 for 19 ( .316 ) with a double, home run and three RBIs - was activated from the IL and assigned to Reading on 8/8 after appearing in six rehab games with the FCL Phillies and Clearwater Threshers.  Had been on the IL since 5/20 after suffering a hand injury with the Blue Claws.  The 2019 10th round draft selection from Fresno State is hitting .278 overall this season in 151 AB’s.

IF Kevin Vicuna -  8 for 22 ( .363 ) with 2 doubles and a triple.  Has a five game hitting streak going.  Hitting .297 for the month in 37 AB’s

C Herbert Iser - 5 for 10 ( .500 ) with a home run and two RBIs - his first week with Reading - was promoted from Jersey Shore on 8/10 - 2019 23rd round draft selection from Dallas Baptist University - .294 batting average in 112 AB’s ( low A to AA ) - started the season in extended spring camp rehabbing a hamstring injury.

Jersey Shore :

C Andrik Nava - 4 for 10 ( .400 ) - the 20 year old was transferred back to Jersey Shore from Clearwater on August 5th.

IF Nicolas Torres - 5 for 12 ( .417 ) - was moved back to Jersey Shore from Clearwater on August 1st after being transferred to Clearwater on June 6th.

Clearwater :

IF Alexeis Azuaje - 7 for 18 ( .389 ) with a triple.  Returned from the IL on 8/5 after being placed there on 5/24 - played in five games with the FCL Phillies on a rehab assignment before returning.  The 20 year old from Ocumare del Tuy, Venezuela is a very good hitter - has posted a .273 batting average in 139 AB’s to date this season with the Threshers.

OF Wilfredo Flores - 6 for 17 ( .353 ) with a home run and four RBIs.  Has had a solid season hitting .265 in 275 AB’s.

FCL Phillies :

OF Dakota Kotowski - 5 for 14 ( .357 ) with 2 doubles & 2 RBIs - the 22 year old was signed 7/25/22 as an un-drafted free agent from Missouri State University after playing for the Williamsport Cross Cutters in the MLB Draft League.  He debuted on August 6th and has a hit in 4 of the 5 games he’s played ( 7 for 18 - .389 ) with 3 doubles.

OF Jordan Viars - 5 for 10 ( .500 ) - 4 hit game on 8/8/21 with a double.  The 19 year old 2021 3rd round draft selection from Frisco, Texas has a .300 batting average in 30 AB’s in August - he’s battled a few injuries, the oppressive Florida weather and adjusting to pro baseball life but there’s plenty of up side in this young man and his game.  Power potential is massive - generates a lot of power with his swing - plays with unbridled passion and hustle - pro success just takes time to develop - it’s there to be had.

OF Justin Crawford - 4 for 13 ( .308 ) - .438 OBP in his debut week - the 18 year old 2021 first round draft selection is tremendously fast and already has 4 stolen bases in his first four games - he’s also made some head turning catches in center field basically outrunning the baseball.  Exciting player to watch develop - excellent start to his career.

IF Nikau Pouaka-Grego - 4 for 11 ( .364 ) with a triple, home run and four RBIs - the 17 year old Australian has had a solid season hitting .301 in 93 AB’s to date with 4 home runs and 16 RBIs. He will continue playing after the season with Team Australia in tournament play and in the winter months for the Adelaide Giants in the Australian Baseball League.

OF Emaarion Boyd - 4 for 9 ( .444 ) with 3 walks - a .583 OBP to begin his career - played three games this week - 2022 11th round draft selection from South Panola HS, Batesville, MS - another electric runner - super quick - also showed a very quick bat and a selective approach - another young man ( 18 years old ) who’s gonna be a lot of fun to watch grow.

DSL Phillies Red :

IF Marco Soto - 8 for 19 ( .421 ) - he has a six game hitting streak ( 10 for 24 - .417 ) which includes three multi hit games.  Marco is hitting .355 for the month in 31 AB’s with a .417 OBP.  On the season the 18 year old from Maturin, VZ is posting a .320 batting average in 153 AB’s and a .392 OBP.

DSL Phillies White :

INF William Bergolla - 6 for 17 ( .353 ) with an additional 3 walks.  He was paid the ultimate compliment in Saturday’s game vs Phillies Red when he was given a two out intentional walk to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth.  The 17 year old ( from Valencia, VZ ) is hitting .367 for August thus far in 30 AB’s with a .486 OBP.
