8/23/21 : Week Sixteen Standouts ( 8/17 to 8/22 )

Writer: Steve PotterSteve Potter

Each Monday this year for the Phillies minor league full season affiliates is a scheduled off day. They get to re-charge from a six day run of games before starting on another stretch the next day.

Here’s a review of the past week with a spot light on players from each team who had good, even great numbers and performances.

Lehigh Valley ( Overall Record 43-51, 2-5 during the past week) - next series @ home vs Scranton Wilkes-Barre ( Yankees Affiliate )

IF TJ Rivera - went 5 for 15 ( .333 ) during the week including a home run and five RBIs in Sunday’s game. The 32 year old veteran is 13 for 37 ( .351 ) in 14 games since being acquired from the Pirates organization on 8/7/21.

Strong Pitching :

RH Cam Bedrosian - threw three scoreless innings in two appearances during the week. For the month of August he’s posted a 1.13 ERA in seven appearances ( 8 IP ) with 11 K’s and 2 walks … a 1.00 WHIP in August. In 14 games for the Iron Pigs he’s recorded a 2.65 ERA in 14 games ( 17 IP, 18 K’s, 6 BB ) and a 1.24 WHIP.

RH Sam Coonrad - made three scoreless appearances during the week ( 3 1/3 IP ) allowing just one hit. The 28 year old is on rehab assignment, he posted just one strikeout but also only two walks.

Reading ( Overall Record 36-60, 2-4 during the past week) - next series @ Portland ( Red Sox Affiliate )

IF Bryson Stott - no one had a bigger week than Bryson as he went 12 for 21 ( .571 ) with five doubles, four walks and four RBIs. He’s got a seven game hitting streak going ( 14 for 26 ) and is hitting .382 ( 26 for 68 ) for the month of August with 7 doubles, a triple, 3 home runs and 11 RBIs. On the season he’s hitting a very solid .291 in 327 AB’s with 24 doubles, 2 triples, 13 home runs and 39 RBIs … sounds like Paul Owens Award type numbers 🤔 , defensively he saw action at third base this week for the first time since minor league spring training.

UTL Matt Kroon - went 8 for 22 ( .363 ) for the week including a four hit, two home run game on Sunday, 8/22. Matt has had a good month of August hitting .297 ( 19 for 64 ) in 19 games. He’s driven in 11 runs during the month. Defensively Matt has made the adjustment from primarily playing corner infield spots prior to this year to generally being an outfielder this season, he’s done a nice job in the defensive conversion.

Strong Pitching :

LH Josh Hendrickson - Tuesday, 8/17 - 5 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 K’s - Josh continues to provide a steady performance in just about every outing. The 23 year old Australian has a 3.38 ERA in four august appearances ( 16 IP ) which aligns with his season ERA of 3.65 in 81 1/3 IP with a 1.14 WHIP.

RH James McArthur - Friday, 8/20 - 5 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 2 BB, 4 K’s - big James was solid in this outing, threw quality strikes and mixed pitches. The 6’7” 24 year old has big arm capabilities but also a repertoire that continues to project him as a starting pitcher. In three August starts he has posted a 3.14 ERA in 14 1/3 IP with 22 K’s and only 4 walks.

Jersey Shore ( Overall Record 41-52, 1-3 during the past week) - next series @ Wilmington ( Nationals Affiliate )

1B/C Vito Friscia - went 7 for 14 ( .500 ) for the week and has a eight game hitting streak going ( 13 for 30 - .433 ). For the month of August Vito is hitting .348/.429/.630 with 4 doubles, 3 home runs, 6 walks and 10 RBIs … he’s had a very solid season posting a .280/.396/.440 slash line in 270 plate appearances. He’s also posted a .996 fielding percentage as a first baseman. The 24 year old was the club’s 40th round draft selection from Hofstra University in the 2019 draft.

UTL Nicolas Torres - went 3 for 10 ( .300 ) for the week in three games with four RBIs. He was promoted to Jersey Shore on 8/14 and has a hit in all four games he’s played in for the Blue Claws ( 5 for 14 - .357 ). The versatile 21 year old has played seven defensive positions this season ( everything but pitcher and catcher )

Strong Pitching :

LH Jhordany Mezquita - 8/17/21 : 6 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 8 K’s - was very good, location, mix, velocity all there, the 8 strikeouts were a career high for K’s in a game. He’s struck out 22 batters in 15 IP in three August starts.

RH Blake Brown - 8/18/21 : 1 perfect IP - struck out the side - popped the mitt at 97 - 100 mph 🔥 … for the month of August Blake has posted a 1.23 ERA in 6 games ( 7 1/3 IP, 12 K’s, 4 BB ) and a 1.08 WHIP. For the season he’s appeared in 29 games ( 33 IP ) and has 47 K’s … a 3.55 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. The 23 year old was signed on 6/18/20 as an undrafted free agent from UNC Asheville, he immediately drew attention with his big arm potential in 2020 Fall Instructs and has shown that same promise this season, if he can harness the command the talent is there to eventually contribute in the show.

LH Erubiel Armenta - 8/19/21 : 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 6 K’s 😳 - Erubiel is yet another high velocity reliever currently in the organization. The 21 year old from Mexico has posted a 3.18 ERA in four August appearances with 13 K’s and 4 walks in 5 2/3 IP. His four seam fastball generally sits in the 94-96 mph range but he also features a heavy sinker that sits 92 to 95 mph, when he commands those along with a 78 mph change up he has shown the ability to dominate as he did this week when he recorded all six outs via strikeout in his two innings pitched. Erubiel has a big frame and a comparable pitching delivery to Aroldis Chapman … attacks hitters and the way he cups the ball seems difficult to pick up, add the velocity and there’s potentially something special. He doesn’t turn 22 till next March and with improved mechanics ( release point ) there’s probably more velocity and movement to be had. Definitely one to watch.

Clearwater ( Overall Record 41-50, 2-5 during the past week) - next series @ home vs Tampa ( Yankees Affiliate )

OF Jared Carr - went 7 for 17 ( .412 ) for the week with 3 doubles and 2 walks. The 22 year old was selected in the 13th round of the 2021 draft from Shepherd University in West Virginia. He’s off to a good start to his pro career hitting .294 in his first 11 games ( 34 AB’s ) with 3 doubles, a home run and four RBIs.

IF Freylin Minyety - was 4 for 9 ( .444 ) in three games played, he had six RBIs on Sunday going 3 for 5 with his first professional home run. Freylin was signed as an Undrafted free agent from Wabash Valley Junior College in Illinois. He had been playing in the MLB Draft League for the West Virginia Black Bears team.

SS/2B Luis Garcia - had a five hit game on Sunday, 8/22 he doubled and homered and scored four runs. OF Baron Radcliff had five RBIs in Sunday’s game, he had two hits and two walks. Baron hit two home runs during the week and drove in seven runs.

Florida Complex Phillies ( Overall Record 15-8 , 4-1 during the past week)

OF Marcus Lee Sang - went 7 for 22 ( .318 ) for the week with three doubles, a triple, home run and four RBIs. The 20 year old 2019 11th round draft selection from Northern Owings, MD is slashing .320/.370/.760 for the month of August in six FCL games. He’s also stolen five bases. Marcus appeared in 11 games with the Clearwater Threshers in July as well. He’s one of a group of exciting young outfielders in the organization. He’s already showing MLB caliber bat speed, the young man has the tools to do very well as he continues to progress and develop.

Dominican Summer League Phillies :

Phillies Red ( Overall Record 14-14 , 2-3 during the past week)

RHP Oswald Medina pitched five scoreless innings on Tuesday, 8/17 ( 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s ) lowering his season ERA to 1.50 in 7 games ( 30 IP ) with 28 K’s and just 2 walks ( 0.93 WHIP ). The 19 year old was signed 5/9/19 and is from Venezuela.

OF Jhorjan Guevara - went 4 for 9 ( .444 ) for the week. The 19 year old was signed on 6/13/19 and is from Venezuela. He’s a right handed hitter who’s listed at 6’2” 170. Jhorjan has appeared in 21 games this season and has played defensively in all three outfield positions.

Phillies White ( Overall Record 16-10 1-3 during the past week)

INF Erick Brito - went 4 for 9 ( .444 ) for the week with a double and two RBIs. The 19 year old has posted a .379 batting average and 1.018 OPS in 24 games played this season … 86 plate appearances.

OF Yemal Flores - went 3 for 9 ( .333 ) in three games played with two doubles. He returned to DSL action on 8/13 after not playing since 7/26 … since his return he’s posted a .385/.529/.615 slash line in five games. The 17 year old was signed on 2/2/21.

RHP Jean Cabrera tossed five scoreless frames on Saturday, 8/21, 4 hits, 0 walks and 4 K’s … he’s now posting a 0.96 ERA in 27 IP with 33 K’s and just 5 walks … impressive numbers for the 19 year old Venezuelan in his first season of DSL play ( signed 7/2/19 )

Happy Day, Happy Baseball
