8/23/23 : Minor League Roundup



International League ( AAA ) -  Lehigh Valley (29-18, 65-55).Scranton Wilkes-Barre (25-21, 59-61) - Doubleheader

Moosic, PA - PNC Field


Game One :  Scranton Wilkes-Barre 4 Lehigh Valley 3 - 8 innings


Summary :


A double and three singles scored two runs for SWB in the first inning.


Weston Wilson walked in the fourth inning, went to third on a single by Darick Hall and scored on a wild pitch.


Dustin Peterson was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning, moved to second on a single by Jim Haley and scored on a single by Cal Stevenson.


Simon Muzziotti and Esteban Quiroz singled in the seventh inning, Muzziotti scored on a single by Jim Haley.


SWB scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a single, hit batter, sac bunt and single.


The game went into extra innings.  SWB scored the game winner in the bottom of the 8th inning on a single to plate the placed runner.


On the Hill :


Nick Nelson pitched six innings plus three batters, three runs, seven hits, three walks, four strikeouts.  Tyler McKay pitched an inning plus - one unearned run, one hit, three walks - one intentional.


At the Bat :


Jim Haley had two of the team’s six hits.  Weston Wilson walked twice.



Game Two :  Lehigh Valley 6 Scranton Wilkes Barre 0


Summary :


Jordan Qsar hit a two run home run in the second inning.


Kody Clemens walked in the seventh, Weston Wilson singled , they scored on a 342 foot line drive home run to right field by Darick Hall.  Drew Ellis and Simon Muzziotti singled, Rafael Marchan doubled to score a run.


On the Hill :


Connor Brogdon opened and pitched two perfect innings, three strikeouts.  Brett Schulze pitched an inning, no runs, one hit, one strikeout.  Braden Zarbnisky pitched two innings, no runs, two hits.  Luis Ortiz finished it, two innings, no runs or hits, one walk.


At the Bat :


Rafael Marchan  had three hits (two singles and double).  Jordan Qsar singled and hit a two run home run.  Simon Muzziotti and Weston Wilson had two hits, Kody Clemens walked three times.  Darick Hall hit a three run home run.

Summary :


Carlos De La Cruz walked in the first inning, Oliver Dunn doubled.  De La Cruz scored on a ground out by Jhailyn Ortiz.


Madison Stokes homered in the second inning.


Oliver Dunn was hit by a pitch in the third inning and scored on a double by Jhailyn Ortiz.


Harrisburg scored a run in the third on a hit batter, walk, sac bunt and run down on a caught stealing at second where the runner at third crossed the plate during the rundown.


Cody Roberts walked in the fifth, Nick Ward was hit by a pitch, they both scored on a double by Jhailyn Ortiz.


Oliver Dunn singled to score a run in the ninth inning.


On the Hill :


Mick Abel had his best outing of the season, no pitch tipping in this one, much tighter sets and mechanics - a very good seven innings, one run, two hits, four walks, three strikeouts - 93 pitches - 53 strikes.  Tristan Garnett pitched an inning, no runs or hits, one walk, two strikeouts.  Keylan Killgore finished it with a perfect inning, two strikeouts.


At the Bat :


Jhailyn Ortiz hit two doubles and had four RBIs. Oliver Dunn had two hits (single & double) and Madison Stokes homered.

Summary :


Bryan Rincon walked in the second inning, stole second and scored on a single by Leandro Pineda.


Justin Crawford reached on fielding error in the third inning.  Gabriel Rincones Jr singled. Kendall Simmons grounded out, Crawford scored. Caleb Ricketts singled to score Rincones Jr.  Bryan Rincon walked and Otto Kemp was hit by a pitch. Leandro Pineda singled to score two runs.


Wilmington scored three runs in the fifth inning on two singles, a hit batter, double and wild pitch.


Justin Crawford singled in the seventh, stole second, went to third on a single by Gabriel Rincones Jr and scored on a sac fly by Kendall Simmons.


Wilmington scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh including three on a home run by Will Frizzell.


Cole Moore walked to lead off the ninth inning, Justin Crawford doubled. Moore scored on a balk.  With two outs Kendall Simmons singled to score Crawford.  Caleb Ricketts homered over the left field wall into the BlueClaws bullpen as the fellas jumped for joy down there!


On the Hill :


Christian McGowan threw really well, four innings, no runs, three hits, no walks, two strikeouts.  Jonh Henriquez pitched an inning, three runs on three hits.  Matt Russell pitched an inning, no runs or hits, one walk.  Jason Ruffcorn went an inning, six runs on five hits. Rodolfo Sanchez pitched a perfect inning, one strikeout.  Wesley Moore closed it, one inning, no runs, one hit, two strikeouts.


At the Bat :


Caleb Ricketts, Justin Crawford, Gabriel Rincones Jr and Leandro Pineda had two hits each, Pineda had three RBIs.  Crawford doubled.

Kendall Simmons had three RBIs.  Caleb Ricketts homered.


Notes :


Shortstop Bryan Rincon has a rocket for an arm, showed it off an a couple plays from deep in the hole to throw runners out.

Summary :


Singles by Bryson Ware, Jordan Dissin and Troy Schreffler scored a run for the Threshers in the second inning.  Ricardo Rosario walked to score another.


William Bergolla singled in the fifth inning and scored on a double by Ricardo Rosario.


Jordan Dissin singled in the sixth inning and scored on a triple by Jordan Viars.  Troy Schreffler hit a sac fly to score Viars.


Lakeland scored two runs in the 8th inning, one on a home run by Seth Stephenson.  A walk, hit batter and single scored another.


On the Hill :


Jonathan Petit was excellent, six innings, no runs, one hit, three walks, four strikeouts.  Yoniel Ramirez pitched an inning, two runs, two hits, three walks, two strikeouts.  Josh Bortka closed, two innings, no runs, no hits, one walk, three strikeouts.


At the Bat :


William Bergolla and Jordan Dissin had two hits.  Ricardo Rosario doubled, Jordan Viars tripled.

System Transactions :


Lehigh Valley : OF Brewer Hicklen acquired from Kansas City Royals for Cash Considerations (retroactive to 8/22). Hicklen, who was on the Royals' AAA Development List, remains on the Development List with Lehigh Valley.   RHP Drew Hutchison placed on the Development List.


Jersey Shore : LHP Jordan Fowler transferred from the seven day IL to the 60 day IL.


Clearwater :  RHP Giussepe Velásquez placed on the Seven-Day Injured List


Brewer Hicklin is 27 years old and was the Royals 7th round draft selection in the 2017 draft from Alabama-Birmingham.  He’s a career .262 hitter in 2,000 minor league AB’s with 88 home runs and 313 RBIs.  Last season he hit 28 home runs and drove in 85 runs with Omaha (AAA).  He can play all three outfield positions with the majority of his time thus far being in left field.  Regarded as a clubhouse leader.  He’s got good wheels, became just the fourth player in the Royals system since 2005 to finish a season with 20 or more stolen bases, doubles and home runs when he hit 30 doubles, stole 35 bases and hammered 28 home runs during the 2022 season.  This season has been a struggle with both injuries and inconsistency in playing time.
