8/3/2020 : Around the Horn - The Day in MLB


Game recaps, fun facts from around MLB ( games played on 8/3 ) …

9 games played ...


Mets 7 ( 4-7 ) Braves 2 ( 7-4 )


Jacob deGrom was dominating over six innings striking out ten batters while yielding two runs on five hits and one walk. He used both power and finesse to baffle the Braves.


Three Mets relievers finished it out with ex Phillie Jared Hughes going two hitless innings and striking out three batters.


Michael Conforto had three hits for New York including a double, Robinson Cano had two knocks and Wilson Ramos had two hits and three RBIs including a two run home run.


Travis d’Arnaud had two hits for Atlanta including a home run.


Other Notes :


Atlanta starter Mike Soroka had to be helped off of the field in the third inning. He tore his right Achilles’ and will be out for the remainder of the season.


Both Robinson Cano ( groin ) and Amed Rosario ( quad ) left the game early with injuries for the Mets.


Padres 5 ( 7-4 ) Dodgers 4 ( 7-4 )


Trent Grisham, Wil Myers and Fernando Tatis Jr all hit solo homers for San Diego as they battled back from an early deficit for the win.


Starter Chris Paddack picked up his second win for the Padres by going six innings ( 3 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 5 K’s ) with help from Emilio Pagan, Drew Pomeranz and Kirby Yates who each tossed and inning to finish it out.


Joc Pederson and Cody Bellinger homered for the Dodgers.


A’s 11 ( 6-4 ) Mariners 1 ( 4-7 )


Oakland scored eight runs in the fifth inning and never looked back in the lopsided victory.


Ramon Laureano had two hits, a walk, two RBIs and scored a run for the A’s. Kris Davis hit his first home run of the season and had two hits and Stephen Piscotty had two hits including a double.


Frankie Montas went seven innings for the win ( 1 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 9 K’s ).


Kyle Seager had two of the four Mariner hits in the game.


Rockies 7 ( 7-2 ) Giants 6 ( 5-6 )


The Rockies Nolan Arenado hit his first home run of the season and had two RBIs while teammate Chris Owings also homered and had two hits while scoring two runs. Colorado scored five runs in their half of the sixth inning. Six hurlers held off the Giants enough for the one run win.


Chadwick Tromp and Mike Yastrzemski each homered for the Giants who rallied with two runs in the top of the ninth but fell short. Wilmer Flores and Alex Dickerson each had two hits.


Cubs 2 ( 8-2 ) Royals 0 ( 3-8 )


Cubs starter Alec Mills went seven innings allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out four batters ... relievers Casey Sadler and Rowan Wick finished it out.


Left Fielder Kris Bryant led the Chicago attack from the leadoff spot with a solo home run and a double.


Danny Duffy pitched very well for the Royals ( 6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 4 BB, 6 K’s ) in defeat. KC was held for five hits in the contest.


White Sox 6 ( 6-4 ) Brewers 4 ( 3-4 )


White Sox starter Carlos Rodon went just two innings before leaving with shoulder discomfort ... he’s coming back from TJ surgery ... no timetable was given for his return.


Six Sox relievers picked their teammate up and kept the Brewers enough at bay. Yoan Moncada had three runs including a home run and double and scored twice. Leury Garcia had three hits ... Jose Abreu had two hits and three RBIs including a two run home run in the seventh inning.


Avisail Garcia had two hits and three RBIs for the Brewers and played center field which was a bit of an adventure for the defensively challenged outfielder 😳. Christian Yelich and Ben Gamel each had two hits.


Twins 5 ( 8-2 ) Pirates 4 ( 2-8 )


DH Nelson Cruz delivered a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Twins ... he had three hits in total with two RBIs ... Max Kepler doubled, had three hits and two RBIs.


Four Minnesota hurlers pitched in the game with Matt Wisler tossing two shutout frames in the seventh and eighth and Taylor Rogers picked up the win with a scoreless ninth.


Cole Tucker homered for the Pirates ... Phillip Evans and Guillermo Heredia each had two hits.


Reds 3 ( 5-5 ) Indians 2 ( 5-6 )


Sonny Gray went six strong innings ( 2 R - 1 earned, 4 H, 2 BB, 8 K’s ) for the Reds and three relievers ( Michael Lorenzen, Nate Jones and Raisel Iglesias) each tossed an inning allowing just one hit.


Nick Castellanos homered for Cincinnati and Joey Votto had two RBIs


Zach Plesac went seven innings ( 3 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K’s ) for the Indians ... another “quality start”. Francisco Lindor had two hits including a solo home run.


Yankees 6 ( 8-1 ) Phillies 3 ( 1-3 )
