8/3/21 : July Standouts - Phillies Minor Leagues


The Phillies issue “Player of the Month” awards in three categories … Hitter, Defender and Pitcher. Below are a few nominations for the July awards … if ya wanna know 🤔🤓.


Hitter of the Month :


Month of May recipient : Bryson Stott

Month of June recipient : Matt Vierling


July Standouts :


OF Jhailyn Ortiz ( 22 yrs old ) - had a tremendous power month slashing .277/.364/.723 for an OPS of 1.088 in 107 plate appearances between Jersey Shore and Reading. He hit 3 doubles, 13 home runs and drove in 25 runs in July. Jhailyn’s 13 home runs during the month tied with Orelvis Martinez ( Low A Dunedin ) for the second most in all of minor league baseball just two behind Taylor Motter ( Triple A Albuquerque ) who hit 15. Ortiz was promoted to AA level Reading on 7/31 where he went 3 for 8 in his first two games and hit his 20th cumulative home run of the season on August 1st.


OF Mickey Moniak ( 23 yrs old ) - slashed .346/.372/.667 with an OPS of 1.039 for the month in 86 plate appearances ( 23 games ) for Lehigh Valley. He hit 8 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs and posted 19 RBIs. He’s brought his season totals to 12 home runs and 49 RBIs while raising his batting average to .253 in 237 AB’s.


UTL Dalton Guthrie ( 25 yrs old ) - went on a torrid streak during the month for Lehigh Valley and finished with a .354/.393/.506 slash line and .899 OPS in 85 plate appearances. Dalton hit 12 doubles during the month which tied for the second most in all of minor league baseball.


C Logan O’Hoppe ( 21 yrs old ) - had a second consecutive excellent month for Jersey Shore slashing .300/.349/.520 for an OPS of .869 in 109 plate appearance and 26 games. Logan had 3 doubles, 5 home runs and 16 RBIs in July bringing his season totals to 14 doubles, 2 triples, 11 home runs and 39 RBIs.


UTL Arquimedes Gamboa ( 23 yrs old ) - finished the month with an ongoing 21 game on base streak ( extended to 22 games on 8/1 ) for Reading and slashed .308/.417/.473 for the month for an OPS of .889. He posted 6 doubles, 3 home runs and 11 RBIs and walked 17 times.


INF Daniel Brito ( 23 yrs old ) - posted a .305/.394/.600 slash line with an OPS of .954 in 109 plate appearances ( 26 games ) between Reading and Lehigh Valley. He hit 4 doubles, 3 triples, 6 home runs and had 17 RBIs while also drawing 13 walks. Daniel was promoted to Lehigh Valley on 7/22 from Reading and was continuing his best offensive season prior to 7/31 when he suffered a medical issue on the field in Rochester.


Pitcher of the Month :


Month of May recipient : Bailey Falter

Month of June recipient : Victor Vargas & Adam Leverett


LH Ethan Lindow ( 22 yrs old ) - had a great month for Jersey Shore, he pitched in 5 games ( 4 starts ) and posted a 1.55 ERA in 29 IP with a 0.90 WHIP walking just 5 batters while striking out 24 batters. After a rough outing to start the month on 7/4 ( 5 IP - 5 R, 9 H ) he became sharp as a tack over his next five appearances allowing just 1 unearned run over 24 IP. He’s currently on an 20 IP scoreless streak in which he’s allowed only 9 hits and 4 walks while striking out 16 batters.


RH Victor Vargas ( 20 years old ) - went 4-1 during the month winning games at three levels ( 7/25 - 5 scoreless innings for Lehigh Valley, 7/31 - 6 scoreless frames for Jersey Shore & 2 wins for Clearwater on 7/3 & 7/10 ). Victor’s only blip in the month was on 7/17 when he yielded 6 runs in 4 1/3 IP … in his other 4 appearances he tossed 20 innings allowing 1 run ( 0.45 ERA ) 9 hits, 6 walks while striking out 18 batters. The LHV start was a temporary spot due to need but he was promoted to High A Jersey Shore on 7/31 for an extended stay. On the season he’s 6-1 ( 2.97 ERA ) in 15 games ( 8 starts ) with 2 saves to boot.


LH Nick Lackney ( 24 yrs old ) - continues to excel as a multi inning reliever. For Reading during the month of July he posted a 1.06 ERA and 0.76 WHIP in 7 games ( 17 IP ) with 13 K’s and 4 walks. The 2019 18th round draft choice from the University of Minnesota has pitched at three levels this summer ( Clearwater, Jersey Shore and Reading ) and has a cumulative 1.59 ERA in 23 games ( 39 2/3 IP ).


RH Mike Adams ( 26 yrs old ) - appeared in 7 games ( 11 2/3 IP ) during the month for Lehigh Valley and posted a 0.00 ERA and 0.94 WHIP allowing just 6 hits and striking out 7 batters. Mike walked 5 batters but 3 came in one game early in the month on 7/6. In his last 5 appearances he’s pitched 9 innings allowing just 4 hits and 2 walks … no walks in his last three outings - 5 2/3 IP.


Defender of the Month :


Month of May recipient : Luke Williams

Month of June recipient : Madison Stokes


OF Mickey Moniak ( 23 yrs old ) - made multiple outstanding catches during the month in center field for Lehigh Valley … web gem variety. He’s made just two errors in 246 chances as an outfielder and has played all three positions albeit primarily in center field.


C Logan O’Hoppe ( 21 yrs old ) - has a .996 fielding percentage in 50 games for Jersey Shore and has thrown out 20 would be base stealers ( 32 % of attempted steals ). He’s committed just 2 errors in 430 1/3 innings of play. Outstanding defender.


UTL Arquimedes Gamboa ( 23 yrs old ) - has reinvented himself into a multi position player at Reading after playing primarily shortstop thru the first six years of his career. He’s posted a 1.000 fielding percentage as a center fielder ( 23 game appearances ), .962 as a shortstop ( 27 game appearances ) and has also appeared in 2 games as a second baseman ( 1.000 fielding pct. ) and 9 appearances at third base ( .950 fielding pct )
