9/1/26 : Phillies sign RHP Sam Carlson to minor league contract

The Phillies have signed 27 year old RHP Sam Carlson to a minor league contract and added him to the Reading roster. Carlson was the 2017 2nd round draft selection of the Seattle Mariners from Burnsville High School in Minnesota. Carlson had TJ surgery in July of 2018 and missed the entire 2019 season. He played in the Mariners organization thru 2023 signing with the Milwaukee Brewers on 11/30/23 and then with the Los Angeles Dodgers on 1/6/25. On 12/27/25 he signed his third minor league free agent contract with the Houston Astros. He pitched for the Astros AAA affiliate Sugar Land this season before being released on 8/4/26.
Carlson had appeared in 31 games for Sugar Land logging 36.1 IP posting a 3.47 ERA with 43 K’s and 14 walks. In his minor league career he’s appeared in 196 games (33 starts) amassing 352.1 IP with a 4.50 ERA. He is noted for having an advanced feel for pitching and using his mix, a sinking fastball (91-94 mph), slider and cutter with the cutter as his primary.
