Never Forget :
For those of us living back in 2001 we all have our memory of that horrific day - here’s mine -
I heard the news that day from a colleague in the office. A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center she said. Soon thereafter I saw folks frantically trying to reach their family and friends on the phone or via email, those whom they knew were scheduled to be in the city that morning.
I was in Madison, NJ that day. It’s twenty nine miles outside of the city. My colleague David and I were there on site for the initial monthly closing of the financial records, we had just led the site thru the installation of SAP, Madison was our company consolidated headquarters at the time. It used to be NYC not too long before that year but had been relocated. Many of the employees based there had family and friends who still worked in the city, many lived in the city still.
Then the second tower was hit. Folks scrambled to find a way into the city as all paths were being shut off. I’ve never witnessed such mass worry and sense of helplessness before. The office was officially closed, folks could stay if they had nowhere else to go. David and I decided to head back to PA, it was the only direction accessible.
The drive back was eerie. Roadways that were normally jammed were basically empty. I listened to the radio as I made the two and half hour trek back to my office in Radnor, PA.
When I got there the scene was similar as the site had closed albeit many remained to watch TV monitors and share emotions, the plane in PA had crashed at that point.
I went home to be with my family. The kids had been dismissed from school early. We watched TV in disbelief. We cried, we got angry, we mourned. It was the most unbelievable day I had ever lived.
So today, we remember. We remember our loss, the many heroes of that day and the days that followed. It unites us as Americans, always should. We will never forget.
