Remembering some New York connections :

A few years back the Phillies had a group of signings from New York of young men that all had big impacts on those of us who got to know them in regard to their persona. Here’s a follow up on what they are doing now - I try to keep in touch with former Phillies minor leaguers that I wrote about as best I can.

RHP Ben Brown - 2017 33rd round draft pick - Ward Melville HS - now a member of the Cubs (was traded there on 8/2/22 for RHP David Robertson) - currently on the IL - has made 60 MLB appearances - great personality - when he was with the Phillies always looked out for his teammates - I remember him taking his glove with him each day back and forth to his hotel - was a superstition of his - wonder if he still does that 🧐.

C Vito Friscia - signed as an undrafted free agent 6/23/19 - Hofstra - made it to AAA level before being released in 2023 - great team presence - I remember him in the FCL urging his teammates to work harder at their game - never took a day off.

C Logan O’Hoppe - 2018 23rd round draft pick - Saint John the Baptist HS - was traded to the Angels 8/2/22 for OF Brandon Marsh. Great personality, I remember his first camp at Clearwater asking me if I was the gentleman who wrote nice things about him in my articles - he thanked me for my words. Is now in the Texas Rangers organization after Angels traded him there 7/29/26 - currently playing for AAA level Round Rock. Has played in 396 major league games from 2022 to 2026.

LHP Nick Fanti - 2015 31st round draft pick - Hauppauge HS - was part of two no hitters as a member of the 2017 Lakewood BlueClaws - injury bug shortened his Phillies career - elbow, back and shoulder issues - was released 8/1/22. Has great character and perseverance - still playing - currently a member of the Staten Island FerryHawks in the Atlantic League.

LHP Kyle Young - 2016 22nd round draft pick - Saint Dominic HS - noted as the Phillies only seven foot tall pitcher - impressed early with his strike throwing ability and was on an upward track - suffered an elbow injury and had TJ surgery - never recovered enough to continue playing - I remember one day at the complex a pitching coach telling him to stand off the mound while the coach was standing on the peak of the mound so that they could talk face to face 🤓. Kyle’s always been a pleasant young man to interact with - retired from baseball in 2020 - now happily married and working in Finance for an Insurance Company in NYC.

LHP Corey Phelan - signed as an un-drafted free agent 8/12/20 - Harborfields HS - passed away in October of 2022 from Non-Hodgkins lymphoma - I remember him on the field catching the eye of fellow writer Jim Peyton as having quality stuff as a lefty. Also remember his tremendous spirit and faith, he corresponded with my while receiving cancer treatments. Had a very positive and selfless outlook - never showed any fear of what was to come, incredible person. His memory lives on in the Corey’s Promise Foundation.
