Friday, 8/19/22 : Minor League Roundup


International League ( AAA ) - Lehigh Valley 8 ( 63-52 ) Buffalo 7 ( 61-53 )


Buffalo, NY - Sahlen Field


Summary :


Will Toffey hit a first inning home run to give LHV a 1-0 lead.


Buffalo scored twice in their half of the first inning on a two RBI single by Vinny Capra - they posted three hits in the frame.


Dalton Guthrie hit a third inning solo home run.


Josh Ockimey & Dustin Peterson hit back to back doubles in the 4th inning to score a run.


A walk, double, error and triple scored two Buffalo runs in the 5th.


Will Toffey hit his 2nd home run of the game in the 6th inning.


A single, walk and back to back doubles ( Stevie Berman & Otto Lopez ) scored two runs for Buffalo in the bottom of the sixth. 


Another run scored on a single by Vinny Capra.


The Iron Pigs loaded the bases in the 7th ( single - Scott Kingery, error & walk ).  Yairo Munoz walked to score a run. Josh Ockimey singled to score another. Dustin Peterson reached on an error which plated a run.


Dalton Guthrie singled in the ninth, stole second - went to third on an infield single by Yairo Munoz & scored on a sac fly by Josh Ockimey.


On The Hill :


LH Kent Emmanuel - 5 IP, 4 R - 2 earned, 7 H, 1 BB, 6 K’s - 83 pitches - 54 strikes

LH Zach Warren - 2/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 WP, 0 K’s - 18 pitches - 9 strikes

Will Toffey hit two home runs. Josh Ockimey had two hits including a double.  Dalton Guthrie had two hits including a home run.   Yairo Munoz had two hits including a double.  Dustin Peterson doubled.


Eastern League ( AA ) - Portland 6 ( 56-56, 26-17 )  Reading 3 ( 50-62, 21-22 )


Reading, PA - First Energy Stadium


Summary :


Johan Rojas walked to lead off the bottom of the first - he promptly stole second base and scored on a single by Jhailyn Ortiz.


Portland scored a third inning run on two walks, a ground out and sac fly by Christian Koss.


Carlos De La Cruz homered in the 4th inning.


Cam Cannon walked and Ceddanne Rafaela doubled for Portland in the fifth - Cannon scored on a balk.


Wendell Rijo reached on a walk in the bottom of the 8th - he scored on a double by Jhailyn Ortiz.


Portland scored four runs in the top of the 9th - two on a walk, single, a  single to right field that Jhailyn Ortiz let get under his glove as he charged in and roll to the fence - we’ve seen him make this type of fielding error a lot this year it seems. The third scored on another single. The fourth run scored on a single to center field that Johan Rojas misplayed and let get by him.


On The Hill :


RH Griff McGarry - 5 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 5 BB, 1 WP, 4 K’s - 87 pitches - 52 strikes - battled command most of the outing

RH Adam Leverett - 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 WP, 1 K - 41 pitches - 30 strikes

RH Trevor Bettencourt - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s - 24 pitches - 14 strikes

Johan Rojas had three hits and a walk plus two stolen bases.  Jhailyn Ortiz had two hits and a walk including a double and posted two RBIs.  Carlos De La Cruz had two hits ( single & home run ).


Notes :


After Griff McGarry retired the first two hitters in the game but the third reached on an error - Griff lost command and walked the  next two hitters.  Pitching coach Matt Hockenberry made a timely mound visit - a boost of confidence chat - the next hitter was punched out on three pitches. 👍


South Atlantic League ( High A ) - Wilmington 4 ( 57-54, 22-24 ) Jersey Shore 1 ( 43-69, 18-28 )


Lakewood, NJ - ShoreTown Ballpark


Summary :


Wilmington scored a second inning run - Onix Vega doubled and scored on a single by Viandel Pena.


Jared Carr & Rixon Wingrove hit back to back doubles in the bottom of the second to tie the game at one apiece.


Viandel Pena tripled to score two runs for Wilmington in the 4th inning. Cole Daily singled to score him.


On The Hill :

Game One : Clearwater 5 Daytona 0 - 8 innings


Summary :


The game was scheduled for seven innings but went into extra frames in a scoreless tie with only seven hits combined between the two teams ( Threshers - 3, Dayton - 4 ).


In the top of the 8th Ryan Leitch singled to score placed runner Leandro Pineda.  Troy Schreffler was hit by a pitch and Alexeis Azuaje singled to load the bases.  Erick Brito tripled over the right fielder’s head to score three runs ! Brito then scored on a wild pitch.


Carlos Betancourt tossed a perfect bottom of the 8th to seal the shutout win.


On The Hill :


LH Jordi Martinez  - 5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s - 54 pitches - 41 strikes

LH Keylan Kilgore - 1 perfect IP, 1 K - 11 pitches - 7 strikes

Ryan Leitch and Alexeis Azuaje each had two hits.  Chad Castillo doubled.  Erick Brito tripled and had three RBIs.


Defensive Gem :


Left fielder Troy Schreffler threw a strike to shortstop Erick Brito who relayed to third baseman Hao Yu Lee in the bottom of the 7th to nail Daytona’s Jack Rogers attempting to stretch a double into a triple.

Game Two : Postponed - inclement weather


Florida Complex League :


Phillies 7 ( 23-29 ) Yankees 6 ( 36-16 )


Summary :


Randy Vasquez walked in the third inning, stole second and scored on a single by Justin Crawford.  Crawford advanced to second base on the throw home, he later scored on a single by Yhoswar Garcia.


The Yankees scored twice in the fifth on a walk, RBI double ( Brenny Escanio ) and RBI single ( Daury Arias ).   They added three in the sixth - two of which scored on a double by Arias.


Otto Kemp singled in the 7th ( first pro AB & Hit ) - Bryan Rincon homered to bring him in - his 2nd HR in as many days.


Jordan Dissin singled to lead off the top of the 9th, Otto Kemp walked and Bryan Rincon singled to load the bases.  Randy Vasquez walked to score a run.  With one out Justin Crawford walked to score another. Ricardo Rosario hit a sac fly to score the third run of the inning.


Jesus Rodriquez hit a solo home run for the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth.


On The Hill :

LH Maikel Garrido - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s - one of two inherited runners scored

Justin Crawford had three hits and a walk - stole his 5th and 6th bases in 8 games played.  Bryan Rincon had two hits and a walk including a two run home run.  Cole Moore doubled.


Notes :


Today’s starting outfield of Emaarion Boyd ( LF ), Justin Crawford ( CF ) and Yhoswar Garcia ( RF ) may be the fastest group ever to start a game in Phillies minor league history 🤔.

Dominican Summer League :


Phillies White 4 ( 36-19 ) Phillies Red 0 ( 35-21 )


Summary :


Team White scored three runs in the second inning on six singles : Raylin Heredia, Jorge Garcia, Jarol Martinez ( RBI ), Romel Mendez ( RBI ), Leny Carela & William Bergolla ( RBI ).


Romel Mendez was hit by a pitch in the 4th, stole second and scored on a single by William Bergolla.
