1/19/2021 : Winter League Recap
Mitchell Edwards had two hits including a grand slam home run to lead Adelaide to a 13-3 win over Brisbane. Mitchell had five RBIs in the game. Former Phillie Curtis Mead had three hits while Luke Williams scored twice after doubling and drawing a walk. Rixon Wingrove doubled and Kendall Simmons singled. Catcher Colby Fitch made his ABL debut.
LHP Taylor Lehman had a great outing pitching four shutout innings allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six batters. He flashed 94 on the speed gun but generally sat in the 91-93 range with “lefty movement” on his fastball and used his slider as the “hammer” pitch.
One thing stands out when watching the ABL games is how much fun the players seem to be having ... there are constant smiles. RHP Tyler Burch joins in the fun in the near future as he’s slated to make his ABL debut during Adelaide’s next two games perhaps even starting one of the contests.
Neftali Feliz yielded a run on 2 hits in 1/3 IP for Aguilas Cibaenas in a 7-4 win over the Gigantes del Cibao. Aguilas won the championship series 4 games to 3.
Puerto Rico :
The Indios de Mayaguez defeated Atenienes de Manati 20-7 to go up in their best of seven playoff series 3-0. Pitching was so stretched for Atenienes that DH Yadier Molina actually took the hill and pitched an inning allowing a run on two hits and a walk. I’m not aware if it was the first time the future hall of famer has pitched in a game 🧐.
RHP Leonel Aponte pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Cardenales de Lara allowing one hit and three walks. Aponte is 21 years old and pitched for Williamsport in 2019.
Former Phillie Cesar Hernandez has joined the Cardenales roster and is playing shortstop.
