1/19/25 : Winter League Roundup

Notes on Phillies and former Phillies participating in winter leagues.


Australian Winter League :


1/19/25 action : in the final game of the regular season the Adelaide Giants (23-17) scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to stage a 9-7 comeback win over the Melbourne Aces (18-22) and eliminate them from playoff contention.  Catcher Lou Albrecht was 2 for 4 (single & double) with two RBIs. Former Phillies minor league outfielder Jared Carr has been outstanding since joining the Giants - he went 2 for 3 with a double and home run, posted two RBIs, two walks and two runs scored - Jared completed the regular season with a 17 game hitting streak!


Former Phillies minor leaguers Nick Ward, Rixon Wingrove and Jordan McArdle (2) each had singles in the game. Diego Gonzalez walked and scored a run in five plate appearances. Former Phillies minor league RHP Todd Van Steensel closed the win with a scoreless ninth inning.  Former Phillies minor leaguers Chris Burke and Mitchell Edwards each had three hits for the Aces - Burke homered, had two RBIs and scored twice. Adelaide will host the Perth Heat (20-20) in a best of three semi-final playoff series beginning on 1/24 while the Sydney Blue Sox (24-16) will host the Canberra Calvery (18-22) in the other playoff series.


Puerto Rico Winter League :


1/18/25 action : Carlos Francisco pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief (0 R, 1 H) to help the Indios de Mauaguez defeat the Senadores de San Juan 2-1 in the second game of the best of seven league championship series and take a 2-0 series lead. The series resumes on 1/20/25.


Dominican Winter League :


1/18/25 action : the Leones del Escogido (10-5) cliched a berth into the league championship series with a 8-6 win over the Tigres del Licey (11-4) in round robin playoff play. Former Phillies infielder Jean Segura went 2 for 3 (singles) with a walk, run scored and RBI for the Leones. The Aguilas Cibaeñas (4-11) defeated the Estrellas Orientales (5-10) 7-6 in the night’s other playoff game. Rodolfo Castro was 1 for 4 (single) with an RBI in the game for the Estrellas. The league championship series between the Tigres and the Leones begins on 1/20/25.


Mexican Pacific League :


1/18/25 action : the Tomateros de Culiacán advanced to the league championship series with a 6-2 victory over the Cañeros de Los Mochis winning their semi-final playoff four games to two. Luis Verdugo had a big game for the Tomateros going 3 for 4 (single and two home runs) driving in five runs and scoring twice!  The Tomateros will now play the Charros de Jalisco in a best of seven series to determine the league champion.


Colombia Winter League :


1/18/25 action : no games played - championship series resumes 1/19/25


Venezuela Winter League :


1/18/25 action : no games played - the league championship series begins on 1/19/25


Nicaragua Winter League :


The season is complete - the Leones de Leon were crowned champions.


Panama Winter League :


The season is complete - the Águilas Metropolitanas were crowned champions.
