10/14/22 : Today at the Complex

As most all Phillies eyes and ears right-fully are on the playoffs at CBP fall workouts continue at Carpenter Complex in Clearwater.  Today we watched as Yairo Munoz, Scott Kingery, Donny Sands & Rafael Marchan took BP on Roberts Field followed by catching drills for Sands and Marchan and infield grounders for Munoz & Kingery.  The workouts are to keep the players in “stay ready” form in case they are needed for the playoffs.

We watched Donny Sands hit all summer with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs as well as in BP the last few days - he can swing the bat, a solid hitter who consistently barrels up the ball.

Five pitchers threw live BP this afternoon - lefties Michael Plassmeyer & Spencer Van Scoyoc and right-handers Tyler Phillips, Tommy McCollum & Eduar Segovia.

Plassmeyer is sneaky quick with the heater - it’s the first time I’ve seen him pitch in person - also throws a very deceptive change up off the fastball - same arm slot and can’t see the spin till it’s diving at the dish.  It’s a pitch that can certainly earn him a big league paycheck going forward.  He did a two inning up/down session.

This was Spencer Van Scoyoc’s first live BP session since a full season rehab from TJ surgery last year.  The young lefty was very happy afterwards - it’s a huge step in the comeback leading into 2023 Spring Training Camp.  Facing hitters is a big adrenaline rush especially when it’s the first time after a lengthy rehab - good job today by Spencer throwing strikes and controlling the emotions.

Tyler Phillips threw his second live BP of the Fall - he’s got a very smooth delivery, no wasted motion.  Tyler also did an up-down session of two innings - showed a slider with late break and a curve ball that had really good “dance” - tumbling action.  Another positive step for a year long TJ rehab  - really like his game - am excited to see the continued progression.

Eduar Segovia was throwing live BP’s in Fall Instructs before the storm interrupted camp, even before that he had notched a few sessions on his belt.  He’s dropped down his arm slot a bit - seems about three quarters whereas I remember him before as higher.  I liked the look though as it didn’t seem to compromise movement ( in fact may have introduced more ) nor velocity.  When we saw Eduar in GCL play he had a longer delivery ( brought the ball from behind his back ).  What we saw today was more compact which would seemingly be less strain on the shoulder when coupled with the lower arm slot.  We’ve always liked his stuff ( 94 to 96 mph FB as a teenager, he’s now 21 years old ) - what we saw today certainly can play - still a ways to go but very encouraging.

Tommy McCollum looks the part of a future big leaguer.  He was dominating Low A play this summer before incurring an ankle injury.  Tommy can sit mid to upper nineties with his fastball and has a sharp slider and drop off the table splitter that are also very capable of being plus pitches.   We saw all three today - great movement on each, nothing was straight - the slider was sharp with bite - the couple splitters we saw had that Bruce Sutter like straight down break when it reached the plate and the heater was dominate - and it wasn’t even at his normal velo range - very encouraging outing - good stuff ⚾️🔥.
