Baseball America’s JJ Cooper reports today that Major League Baseball ( MLB ) has proposed to the New York Penn League
( NYPL ) that they become a 60 game wood bat amateur league that is catered to collegiate draft eligible rising seniors who want to showcase their talents.
The new league would be governed by Prep Baseball Report which is a national showcase and scouting service.
The ten team Appalachian League has already agreed to convert to an amateur summer league. Under the proposal the Appalachian League would cater to rising freshman and sophomore collegiate players with rising juniors being encouraged to play in the Cape Cod League. It would create a summer circuit for amateur level baseball akin to the tiers of the professional minor leagues.
According to the article the proposal has yet to be agreed upon by the New York Penn League team owners. Some of the teams may be included in the restructuring of Minor League Baseball while others may choose to join Independent professional leagues.
The Williamsport CrossCutters are currently affiliated with the Phillies and would be directly impacted by whatever decision is made regarding the NYPL.
