LHP Ryan Sherriff was claimed by the Phillies off waivers from the Rays today. The 31 year old reliever spent most of 2021 with the Durham Bulls, the Rays AAA affiliate. He pitched in 32 games for Durham posting a 2.81 ERA in 25 2/3 IP and a 1.25 WHIP.
He’s pitched 44 games in the major leagues with the Cardinals ( they drafted him in the 28th round of the 2011 draft ) and Rays ( 16 games in 2021 and was on their 2020 World Series roster ). He has a MLB career 3.65 ERA in 44 1/3 IP. Control has been an issue in his major league time … a 3.5 BB/9 rate. In 10 minor league seasons his BB/9 rate is much better at 2.4.
Sherriff has a three pitch mix … sinker, slider and changeup. The sinker generally sits in the 91-93 mph range with the changeup at 85 and slider at 81. He’s a ground ball pitcher and has an excellent career ground ball rate of 60 percent.
Sherriff has a side arm delivery that he changed to in 2016 when he was a member of the Memphis Redbirds. He had Tommy John surgery in 2018 and was released that season by the Cardinals. The lower arm angle and spin on his pitches are how he’s been effective.
