11/9/22 : News and Notes

Updated: Nov 10, 2022

The Phillies today out-righted five players to the minor leagues - here’s what that means - they have been sent from the Majors to the Minor Leagues ( removed from the 40 man roster ) and have cleared waivers, meaning no other team put in a claim for them.   The players out-righted today were LHP Damon Jones, RHP Mark Appel, RHP Hans Crouse, LHP Kent Emanuel and INF Yairo Munoz.   Munoz, Appel & Emmanuel can opt out and become free agents if he they choose to do so.

In addition to the out-rights LHP Andrew Vasquez and RHP Luis Gomez were claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.  The Phillies now have six open spots on their 40 man roster.

Ortiz, 27, made six relief appearances for the Giants in 2022, posting a 1.04 ERA in 8.2 innings (1 ER).  He spent the majority of the season with triple-A Sacramento where he posted a 4.54 ERA (34 ER, 67.1 IP) over 35 appearances (4 starts) with 72 strikeouts to only 13 walks (5.54 SO/BB ratio).  Ortiz, a native of Sanger, Calif., was originally selected in the first round (30th overall) of the 2014 MLB draft by the Texas Rangers.   He’s pitched for the Rangers, Brewers, Orioles and Giants organizations - mostly in the minors - only nine major league appearances.

Ortiz’s fastball sits 92-95 mph with good life and arm-side run; has shown ability to reach back for 96-97, his arsenal features a four-seam fastball, slider, curveball, and sinker. He almost exclusively throws his four-seamer, which sits in the mid-90s, and slider. Ortiz throws his slider more than his fastball.

Vasquez, 29, made 10 major league appearances last year between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Giants.  He was claimed off waivers by the Phillies on Aug. 2 and was optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley before being designated for assignment on Aug. 15 and later claimed by the Giants.  A 6-foot-6 left-hander from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Vasquez has made 204 minor league appearances in his career and has 440 strikeouts in 295.1 innings pitched (13.41 SO/9.0 IP) with a 2.41 ERA (79 ER, 295.1 IP).
