Life Skills and Education :

One of the great things that the organization does off the field is teaching players in classroom settings education and life skills with a focus on the foreign born players. At the Dominican Academy players are enrolled in classes and each year there’s a graduation ceremony for those who graduate high school in the program and earn their diplomas. It’s a great celebration and watching it each year warms my heart seeing the players beam with pride in their accomplishment.

Players are also taught English as a second language - recently catcher Alirio Ferrebus and pitcher Moises Chase tested out of taking English classes which is also a big accomplishment. In order to test out players are assessed in speaking, listening and with a written test - they must earn an average of 90% on the assessments. While “testing out” doesn’t mean their English is “perfect” the assessment does mean that they are able to communicate effectively with coaches and fellow players in their job as a professional baseball player. Good stuff!

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
