3/2/2021 : Phillies Grapefruit Game Three

Decided last minute this morning to venture over and watch the game in Dunedin. As is our usual way we got there as soon as the gates opened ... I’m never late for anything 🤓. The Phillies didn’t arrive till about 12:30 as they took BP in Clearwater.

Game Summary : Blue Jays 4 Phillies 2 - Six Innings

Lourdes Gurriel Jr hit a leadoff home run to begin the 4th inning for Toronto against lefty Bailey Falter. They scored another run in the inning on a double by Jonathan Davis and an RBI single by Josh Palacios.

Darick Hall smoked a two run double off the right center field wall in the top of the fifth inning to score Odubel ( singled ) and CJ Chatham ( walked ) and tie the score.

Toronto scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning ... double, HBP and three walks.

On The Hill :

Zach Wheeler threw two scoreless frames allowing just one hit. Finished with two strikeouts. Speed gun wasn’t on while Zach was on the mound 🤷‍♂️.

Adonis Medina threw a perfect inning with one K ... new windup that I haven’t seen him use before at least, bringing his hands over his head. Adonis’s FB sat 89-90 ...topped out at 93.

Bailey Falter yielded a leadoff home run to Lourdes Gurriel Jr to begin the 4th inning. He yielded another run on a double and single. Fastball velocity was 92-93 however he got hit on the sliders that hung ... after a walk and his 29th pitch the inning was rolled with two outs ... both K’s. Some good, some bad for Bailey today as a few of his sliders were sharp and produced swings and misses.

Damon Jones pitched a scoreless fifth inning yielding a single and a walk. His velocity topped out today at 94 mph on the heater. From our vantage point seemed like he was getting squeezed on a few pitches.

Christopher Sanchez yielded two runs on three walks, a HBP and a double. We didn’t see him throw as we had to leave to go get my wife’s Covid vaccination shot ... from what the box score indicates sounds like Christopher didn’t record an out.

At The Plate :

Mickey Moniak was robbed of extra bases in the 5th inning by Toronto’s left fielder Forrest Wall who made a leaping catch against the fence.

Darick Hall doubled while Adam Haseley, Odubel Herrera and Scott Kingery each singled.

Hall reached base twice with a HBP and double. Odubel stole second base in the fifth inning ... he’s lean and strong looking ... also didn’t fidget in the batters box today ... was all business.

Web Gems :

Alec Bohm made a really nice barehand pickup and throw on a slow rolling grounder to record the first out in inning number one 👏. In the same inning he fielded a bullet to his glove side to get the third out of the inning.

Alec made another diving stop on a hard grounder in the third inning to get the out. Strong throws to first on all.

Alec had a day in the field, looked very quick and fluid ... best I’ve seen him.

Odubel made a diving catch on a low liner in right field for the final out of the third inning.

Phil-Ins :

We noticed ushers twice telling folks to wear their masks while seated ... all complied.

If ya come to watch a game at the Jays stadium in Dunedin and want to avoid the sun there are only a few rows in the shade. Rows 13 and up along the third base line and rows 10 or so and up along the first base line. The stadium itself is a “Baker Bowl” ... sun is intense on hot days 🥵.

Next :

Phillies travel back to Lakeland tomorrow to face the Tigers.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
