3/20/23 : Today in Spring Training


Major League Camp :


Grapefruit League Action :


Phillies 14 ( 13-10- 1 ) Orioles 6 ( 12-11 ) @ Clearwater


Summary :


Baltimore scored two runs in the first inning on a walk, error, ground out and single.


The Phillies offense exploded for seven runs in the second inning - Nick Castellanos led off with a double down the left field line, Brandon Marsh walked and Edmundo Sosa singled to load the bases.  Josh Harrison singled to right field to score two.  Jake Cave tripled to score two more.  Rhys Hoskins homered and scored Cave in front of him.  Alec Bohm went back to back with a bomb to left field that hit off the roof of the Tiki Bar.  Nick Castellanos hit his second double of the inning as the 10th batter to come to the plate.


Edmundo Sosa doubled in the third inning and scored on a single by John Hicks.  Bryson Stott singled, both he and Hicks scored on a double by Rhys Hoskins.  Alec Bohm doubled to score Hoskins.


The Orioles scored three runs in the 4th inning on a home run by Gunnar Henderson.  They added one in the fifth on an RBI double by Heston Kjerstad.


The Phillies concluded the scoring with three in the seventh - Kody Clemens doubled and scored on a single by Weston Wilson. The bases then became loaded on a walk and error.  Pinch hitter Darick Hall hit a missile off the right field wall against lefty DL Hall to score two runs.


At the Plate : 15 H, 6 BB, 8 K’s


Rhys Hoskins, Alec Bohm & Nick Castellanos each had two hits.  Bohm, Darick Hall, Jake Cave & Josh Harrison each had two RBIs.  Rhys Hoskins posted four RBIs.  Castellanos had two doubles.  Hoskins, Edmundo Sosa, Kody Clemens & Bohm each doubled.  Jake Cave tripled.  Hoskins & Bohm homered.


Pitching :


Eleven pitchers pitched in the game for the Phillies.  Four minor leaguers appeared in the game, none yielded a run.  RH Cristian Hernandez went 2/3 of an inning ( 1 H, 1 BB - 7 pitches - 6 strikes ), RH Andrew Schultz went 2/3 IP - 2 BB, 1 K - 24 pitches - 11 strikes - 96 to 98 mph with four seamer, RH Jack Perkins retired the only batter he faced on a fly out to center field - 4 pitches - 3 strikes and RH Matt Russell struck out the side with a perfect ninth inning to finish the game - 14 pitches - 10 strikes - 93 to 96 mph with FB and 88 mph with his cutter.

Trade Acquisition :


The Phillies have acquired outfielder Jordan Qsar from the Tampa Rays for cash considerations.  Qsar is 27 years old and bats left handed, he’s a right handed thrower.  He’s played all three outfield positions but primarily the corners, last season he played at both the AA and AAA levels - was the Rays 25th round draft selection in the 2018 draft from Pepperdine University.

Side Bullpens :


Nine pitchers threw side bullpen sessions on the seven mounds in front of the David Montgomery Training Center, pitchers who threw today - Gabriel Cotto, Colton Eastman, James McArthur, Starlyn Castillo, Jordan Fowler, Rafael Marcano, Eduar Segovia, Jaydenn Estanista, Estibenzon Jimenez

High A Game : Roberts Field vs Jays


At the Plate : 13 H, 8 BB, 8 K’s


DH Dakota Kotowski, 1B Chad Castillo, 3B Ty Penner & SS Erick Brito each had two hits.  Kotowski’s hits were both doubles.  Ty Penner homered and also walked twice, he was on base in all four of his plate appearances.  The Phillies stole nine bases in the game, two each by Gabriel Rincones Jr & Erick Brito


Pitching :


Aaron Nola pitched six innings and struck out eight batters, he walked none.  Andrew Walling ( 1 1/3 IP ) and Carlos Betancourt ( 1 2/3 IP ) followed.


Low A Game : Ashburn Field vs Jays


At the Plate : 16 H, 6 BB, 4 K’s


CF Rickardo Rosario had a day going 3 for 4 with a walk, double, two home runs and four RBIs - he scored two runs out of the leadoff spot. SS Bryan Rincon went 2 for 3 with 2 walks and a double.  3B Felix Reyes was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. LF Gavin Tonkel went 2 for 2 with a walk and two RBIs.  The Phillies stole no bases in the game but then again they didn’t have to as the club scored 13 runs.

RH Malik Binns - 1 IP

RH Jonh Henriquez - 1 IP

LH Matt Osterberg - 2 IP

RH Jose Peña Jr - 1 2/3 IP

At the Plate : 4 H, 5 BB, 8 K’s


LF Simon Muzziotti went 2 for 4 with a double. DH Jhailyn Ortiz walked twice in four plate appearances.

RH Adam Leverett - 1 IP

Double A Game :

LF Baron Radcliff, 3B MCCarthy Tatum and 1B Rixon Wingrove each had two hits.  Radcliff homered twice and had two RBIs.  Tatum doubled and homered and had two RBIs. Wingrove doubled as did C Arturo DeFreitas.
