3/26/21 : Grapefruit League Game Twenty-Five

Very warm and humid evening in Dunedin🥵.

Game Summary : Blue Jays 6 Phillies 5

The Phillies scored in the first inning as Didi Gregorius was HBP with the bases loaded.

Toronto scored a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Catcher Danny Jansen.

Bryce Harper smoked a long home run over the center field wall to lead off the fifth inning. Scott Kingery doubled off the same wall later in the inning to score Didi Gregorius ( singled ) and Andrew Knapp ( fielder’s choice ). Ronald Torreyes singled to score Kingery.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr led off the eighth inning with a home run for the Blue Jays. Breyvic Valera hit a two run home run. Forrest Wall tripled to score another run.

Toronto scored a run in the ninth for the walk off win on two walks and a game winning single by Richard Urena.

On The Hill :

Chase Anderson ( FB 92-94 ) went four innings - 84 pitches - 48 strikes. His final line in the game : 1 R, 2 H, 4 BB, 2 K’s. Anderson finished the spring with a 3.07 ERA in 14 2/3 IP over five games.

Hector Neris ( FB 93-94 ) tossed a perfect fifth inning with two strikeouts, had a very good splitter this evening.

Jose Alvarado ( FB 99-101 ) pitched a perfect sixth inning with two strikeouts. Bounced back strong from last nights erratic outing.

Bryan Mitchell ( FB 94-95 ) threw a scoreless seventh inning but struggled in the eighth frame. He went 1 2/3 innings and was charged for four runs on four hits and two walks.

Neftali Feliz ( FB 93-95 ) allowed an inherited run to score on a triple before getting out of the eighth inning. He walked the first two batters he faced in the ninth inning, went 1/3 IP - 1 H, 2 BB.

JD Hammer ( FB 96-98 ) allowed an inherited run to score on a single. One out recorded.

At The Plate : 15 hits and 5 walks as a team

Ronald Torreyes ( who I believe is making the opening day roster ) had three hits.

Andrew McCutchen had two hits and a walk. Jean Segura had two hits, one a bunt single. Bryce Harper hit a home run and walked twice.

Nick Maton doubled and walked in two plate appearances.

Scott Kingery had a double and two RBIs and hit another ball very hard on a 5-3 groundout. He also struck out and reached on a fielder’s choice on a softly hit grounder to shortstop.

Doubles : Rhys Hoskins, Scott Kingery, Nick Maton

Home Runs : Bryce Harper

Defensive Gems :

Bryce Harper deked Cavan Biggio on a fly ball in the third inning. Biggio was a base runner on first base, a shallow fly ball was hit to right field and Harper feigned catching it which caused Biggio to stop halfway to second base. When the ball dropped Harper threw a strike to shortstop Didi Gregorius covering second to record the force out 🤛.

Shortstop Didi Gregorius made an sidearmed flip to second baseman Jean Segura while falling towards third base to record a force out at second base.

Center Fielder Scott Kingery made a grab against the wall to end the fifth frame.

Shortstop Luis Garcia made a stellar stop and long leap throw from deep in the hole to record the final out of the eighth inning.

Notes :

Catcher Rafael Marchan made his 2021 Grapefruit League debut replacing JT Realmuto in the sixth inning. He had been sidelined most of the spring with a hamstring injury.

Twenty year old Johan Rojas is starting to show the skills we’ve raved about, another line drive single tonight and also stole his fifth base of the spring. He’s gonna be fun to watch this summer in the minors.

Phil-Ins :

Mini Camp players on the roster today included pitchers Tyler Carr, JD Hammer , David Paulino, Jakob Hernandez and Bryan Mitchell , Catcher Edgar Cabral, Infielders Luis Garcia, Darick Hall, Luke Williams and Bryson Stott and Outfielders Matt Vierling and Johan Rojas.

Grapefruit League record is now 11-13-1
