Scrimmage Notes ( from fellow fan Dave Banks ) :

Visiting Team :

Right fielder Leandro Pineda had a day - doubled down the right field line and tripled to right center, also walked.  Center fielder

Yhoswar Garcia walked and was HBP in three PA’s - stole two bases - scored a run.  Second baseman Hao Yu Lee walked and was HBP in three PA’s - stole a base.  1B Nick Podkul, LF Marcus Lee Sang & 2B Oliver Dunn each singled.  Catcher Herbert Iser showed off the hose by throwing out the speedy Cade Fergus at second base attempting to steal.

RHP Andrew Schultz had a strong inning in the second frame - three ground outs - looked good.  LHP Spencer Van Scoyoc posted two strikeouts in a scoreless 5th frame.

Home Team :

Cade Fergus ( CF ) continues to have a strong mini camp - he homered to left field ( a long one 💪 ) and walked twice in three plate appearances.  2B Otto Kemp tripled to the right center field gap. 3B Cameron Cannon and C Ryan Leitch each singled.

RH Orion Kerkering impressed - struck out the side in his inning - two looking - big arm and solid secondaries.  RH Noah Skirrow showed good velocity in his inning - yielded a hit and a walk and struck out a batter in a scoreless frame.

Thanks Dave for the assist in coverage !

Action shot of the day - Minor League Assistant Video Coordinator Thomas Knauss checking the cameras - the video crew is outstanding in capturing all the action and data providing the player development staff great support !

Major League Camp :

Side Bullpens :

Griff McGarry threw a morning side bullpen session.

Grapefruit League Action :

Phillies 4 ( 5-3-1 ) Pirates 3 ( 1-5 ) @ Clearwater

Summary :

Pittsburgh scored twice in the first inning - Canaan Smith-Njigba reached on a three base error that left fielder Kyle Schwarber lost in the sun - Ke’Bryan Hayes scored him on what was scored a triple to left center field that novice center fielder Edmundo Sosa couldn’t reel in - likely should have been caught.  Hayes scored on a sac fly by Ji-Man Choi.

The Phillies scored four runs in the third inning - Jhailyn Ortiz singled, then advanced to second on a balk, he scored on a single by Kyle Schwarber.  Alec Bohm homered to right field to score Schwarber in front of him.  Edmundo Sosa singled, Darick Hall walked - Sosa then stole third base - he scored on a single by Scott Kingery.

Ji-Man Choi doubled to score Ke’Bryan Hayes reached on an error for the Pirates in the 6th inning.

Matt Strahm,  Connor Brogdon, James McArthur, Jeremy Walker & Mark Appel each pitched scoreless innings - Brogdon and Walker pitched perfect innings - Aaron Nola went three innings as the starter - with good fielding behind him he wouldn’t have yielded either a hit or a run.

At the Plate :  8 H, 4 BB, 9 K’s

Alec Bohm had two knocks including a two run home run - he played well defensively at third base as well.  Kyle Schwarber had two hits from the lead off spot.  Jhailyn Ortiz stung the ball twice, one was a single - the other a line out to center field.  Edmundo Sosa & Scott Kingery each had hits - Aramis Garcia doubled - Darick Hall walked twice in three tough plate appearances all against lefties ( which according to some he apparently can’t handle 😂 ) - worked the count full in each - battled.

Defense :

Weston Wilson has looked smooth wherever he’s been played - today at third base ( we’ve now seen him at all four infield spots and right field ) - solid minor league free agent pickup from the Brewers.  I really like the energy of young shortstop Pedro Martinez - executed two nice plays to close out the game in the ninth inning - performs like he belongs - the 22 year old minor league rule five pickup from the Rays can spank the ball as a hitter as well - we’ve witnessed that on the backfields in mini camp as he’s delivered hard hit line drives in live BP sessions.  Good stuff.

Pitching lines :

RH Aaron Nola - 3 IP, 2 R - 1 earned, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s -  40 pitches - 28 strikes

LH Matt Strahm - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s - 13 pitches - 10 strikes

RH Connor Brogdon 1 perfect IP - 1 K - 12 pitches - 9 strikes

LH Andrew Vasquez - 1 IP, 1 unearned R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s - 22 pitches - 16 strikes

RH James McArthur - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K - 14 pitches - 7 strikes

RH Jeremy Walker - 1 perfect IP - 14 pitches - 8 strikes

RH Mark Appel - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K - 11 pitches - 8 strikes

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
