3/5/22 : Today at the Complex - Minor League ST Camp - Day One

Pitchers and Catchers first day on the practice fields today. The morning hours were mostly dedicated to meetings and indoor work. There was a group of position players from mini-camp that worked out on the field at BayCare Ballpark. They did running drills, took infield/outfield and batting practice.

On the Complex fields the balance of position players from mini camp conducted their work on Ashburn Field. There were also PFP’s ( Pitcher’s Fielding Practice ) on Carlton Field. I believe some hurlers threw bullpens as well on the seven mounds in front of the David Montgomery Training Center.

Outfielder Yemal Flores stood out in drills on Ashburn field - in particular his throwing ability.

The full camp roster was made available to the public, just had to ask for it at the front door and the security steward would accommodate. The link to the roster on my webpage is as follows : https://www.philliesbaseballfan.com/post/3-5-22-2022-phillies-minor-league-camp-roster

Here are new and previously unannounced roster additions :

RHP James Marvel - 28 years old - signed as a free agent - 2015 Pirates 36th round draft selection - Duke University. He’s pitched in the Pittsburgh organization for his entire career. Has a cumulative record of 47-33 with a 3.42 ERA in 117 games ( 113 starts ) amassing 645 IP. He pitched for AAA Indianapolis in 2021 making 22 starts. He throws a sinker that generates a lot of ground balls - occasionally throws a four-seamer. Both pitches average in the 90 -93 mph range. He also throws a curve and change, with the former being his best pitch. He had an outstanding season in 2019 between AA and AAA posting a 16-5 record with a 2.94 ERA in 28 starts ( 162 1/3 IP ) with 136 K’s and 46 walks. He throws strikes and generally keeps his team in the game.

1B Joe Genord - 25 years old - signed as a free agent - 2019 Mets 9th round draft selection - University of South Florida. He was released by the Mets in August of 2021 after playing in 59 games with High A Brooklyn hitting .203 in 207 ABs with 7 home runs and 20 RBIs. Is known for his raw power - he hit 5 home runs in his first 18 games with Brooklyn, he hit 44 home runs in college for USF. Like many power hitters making contact has been an issue as his pro strikeout rate is over 30 percent.

UTL Drew Maggi - 32 years old - signed as a free agent - 2010 Pirates 15th round draft selection - Arizona State University.

He played for AAA level St Paul in the Twins organization in 2021 appearing in 95 games posting a .252 average in 318 AB’s.

He’s played every defensive position except center field, pitcher and catcher in his pro career and has played in the Pirates, Angels, Dodgers, Guardians ( Indians ) and Twins organizations appearing in 1,053 games.

OF Justin Williams - 26 years old - signed as a free agent - 2013 Diamondbacks 2nd round draft selection - Terreboume High School, Houma, LA - he was traded to the Rays in 2014 and then to the Cardinals in 2018. Last season he appeared in 51 major league games with St. Louis and hit .160 in 119 AB’s with 4 home runs and 11 RBIs. He played in 23 2021 games at AAA Memphis and hit .274 in 84 AB’s with 6 homers and 19 RBIs. Justin is a career .294 hitter in the minor leagues in 630 games ( 2,366 AB’s ) with 131 doubles and 61 home runs. Scouting reports indicate he’s got plus power, is an average defender and is projectable as a potential MLB bench piece who can play both corner outfield spots.

Other Notes :

Arriving from the Dominican Academy for spring camp are some highly regarded pitchers ( at least by me as I saw them in Fall Instructs ) - 20 yr old Elberson Castellano, 20 yr old Jayden Estanista, 20 yr old Estibenzon Jimenez, 20 yr old Oswald Medina and 18 yr old Giuseppe Velasquez.

There are 16 teenagers on the camp roster with pitcher Jose Pena Jr being the youngest at 18.2 years of age. OF Jordan Viars, OF Yemal Flores, C Rickardo Perez, P Giuseppe Velasquez, P Andrew Painter and P Micah Ottenbreit are also 18 year olds in camp.

Nine players are listed as Non Roster Invites meaning that they would be in big league camp if there wasn’t a lockout. The players are pitchers Cam Bedrosian, Andrew Bellatti, Tyler Cyr, Kyle Dohy, Michael Kelly, Joe Gatto Jake Newberry, IF Yairo Munoz and OF Justin Williams.

Left handed pitchers David Parkinson and Parker Scott are not active in camp as they are on the restricted list.

Also a welcome to new Organizational Intern - Player Development Jake Primack who will be working out of the Complex offices. We met Jake today and wish him the best in his endeavors this coming season !
