Extended Spring Training :
Phillies 8 Tigers 3 ( when I left after 6 1/2 innings )
Carpenter Complex - Ashburn Field
Summary :
Extended spring games can get tedious especially when the young pitchers have difficulty throwing strikes. This afternoon that was the case for the visiting Tigers staff as they walked 8 and hit another 3 batters in just 6 innings that we watched. We left after 6 1/2 innings to go get some food so am not sure it went a full nine or not. I’ll report on just what we saw.
The Phillies four pitchers we watched all threw relatively well, they issued no free passes and allowed just six hits. It was the first time we’ve seen 18 year old RH Giuseppe Vasquez up close in action - very good mechanics, easy delivery - minimal effort and fastball jumps - didn’t get radar reads but would guess 90-93 range. Looks like another youngster with upside.
We continue to be impressed with Jose Pena Jr ( 18 yrs old ), saw him pitch again today - the ball jumps and he can spin it too, left a few pitches up in his first inning this afternoon which got hit well but bounced back and struck out the side in a perfect second frame. Both Jordan Fowler and Carlos Betancourt threw well also.
Herbert Iser ripped a double early in the game and both Chris Burke and Freddy Francisco doubled as well. Leandro Pineda, Burke and Nikau Pouaka-Grego each had two RBIs. Erick Brito continues to show outstanding defensive skills, today at shortstop and Pouaka-Grego is very smooth at second base. Chris Burke made a nice catch in left field once again on a sinking drive.
