An early morning scrimmage in the stadium concluded 2021 minor league camp. I was the only non employee on hand to watch in the empty stadium during the 7 1/2 inning contest ... that was pretty cool actually 🤓.
Here are the highlights ...
On the Hill
Seven different hurlers took the mound with RHP Victor Vargas having the most success, the 20 year old faced the minimum of nine batters in his three inning stint allowing just one hit - he promptly picked that runner off at first base. He allowed no walks and struck out three. It’s gonna be fun watching him perform this summer.
Others who pitched today included Mick Abel ( 3 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 3 K’s, 0 BB ), James McArthur ( 3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 3 K’s, 0 BB ), Mark Appel ( 2 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 0 K’s, 0 BB - 1 inning rolled with 2 outs ), Starlyn Castillo ( 2 frames - both rolled - 1 out recorded, 1 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 1 HBP ), Gabriel Cotto ( 2 frames - one rolled, 3 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s ) and Carlos Francisco ( 1 frame - rolled - 2 outs recorded - 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K ).
At the Plate :
Abrahan Gutierrez was 2 for 3 with two doubles. Rixon Wingrove had two hits ( single & double ) as did Bryson Stott. There were nine extra base hits in the scrimmage. The fellas were swinging with conviction on the last day of camp 💪. Casey Martin and Cole Stobbe each hit taters over the left field fence, Martin’s was a two run shot and Stobbe’s produced three runs.
Doubles : Bryson Stott, Chris Burke, Abrahan Gutierrez ( 2 ), Rixon Wingrove , Sal Gozzo
Triple : Hunter Hearn
Home Runs : Casey Martin, Cole Stobbe
Defensive Gem :
Johan Rojas made a tremendous running catch against the center field fence in the third inning to rob Keaton Greenwalt of extra bases ... the young man can go get em with the best ! He’s fun to watch 👏.
That’s a wrap for minor league camp ... the minor league season starts next week as does extended spring training at the complex. We will be watching from a fan’s view 👀
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
