International League - Lehigh Valley 7 ( 1-0 ) Columbus 3 ( 0-1 )

Allentown, PA - Coca-Cola Park

Summary :

Chilly night at the ball yard. CF Dalton Guthrie led off the bottom of the first inning with a double down the left field line but was stranded there. James Marvel pitched effectively and held Columbus scoreless thru three innings - retired the last five batters he faced in order.

The Iron Pigs loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with two outs on a double from Will Toffey and consecutive walks to Donnie Sands and Darick Hall but LHV couldn’t push any runners across the plate.

Justin Williams led off the bottom of the fourth with a double over the left fielder’s head, he went to third on a single from John Andreoli that went off the shortstop’s glove and trickled into short left field. With one out Williams was thrown out at the plate on a short fly ball to right field that the fielder caught and threw home where the catcher tagged him out to end the inning.

Rain began to fall in the top of the 5th frame and the balance of the contest was played with steady rain.

Jose Fermin hit a two run home run for Columbus in the top of the 5th. David Fry went back to back to make it 3-0.

Seven run 8th Inning ! - Lehigh Valley loaded the bases on walks in the bottom of the 8th inning, Justin Williams grounded into a double play as one run scored. After John Andreoli walked Drew Maggi got an infield single to score LHV’s second run. Ali Castillo then doubled down the right field line to score two runs and scored himself on a throwing error ! Dalton Guthrie singled and scored when Will Toffey blooped a fly ball that fell in front of the center fielder for a double. Guthrie scored on an error by the outfielder. At Bat : 9 hits, 8 walks, 10 strikeouts

3B Will Toffey was on base four times with two walks and two doubles. Dalton Guthrie, Ali Castillo and Justin Williams each doubled. Guthrie had two hits in the game after singling in the 8th. Darick Hall was on base twice with a walk and HBP. Donnie Sands and John Andreoli each drew two walks. Sands also singled.

Defensive Gems :

3B Will Toffey made a diving stop on a hard grounder to his left and threw to first to end the top of the fifth inning. Dalton Guthrie made a diving catch in center field in the seventh inning.

Notes :

The new pitch clock rule was in effect for the first time tonight - 14 seconds between pitches with no runners on - 19 seconds with base runners - noticeable in that pitchers got the ball and were ready to throw 👀. The game still took well over three and a half hours given the conditions, fielding errors by Columbus and all the free passes - 15 walks combined in the game.

Also in effect, as they were last season, were the larger bases - they are noticeable and seem flatter than the traditional bags.

Bench Coach Greg Brodzinski coached third base for the Iron Pigs with Manager Anthony Contreras working from the dugout.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
