Each Monday in the 2021 Phillies minor league season is an off day for the four affiliated teams. They get to re-charge from a six day stretch of games before starting on another stretch the next day.
Here’s a review of the week with a spot light on six players who had solid starts last week.
Luke Williams - Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs
The super versatile defender had a terrific week posting a .440 batting average in the six games in 27 plate appearances. His on base percentage was .481. Luke had eleven hits in twenty five AB’s with three doubles and seven RBIs. His 14 total bases was second highest in the system for the week. Defensively he played six different positions ( LF,CF,RF, 2B,SS, 3B ) and handled 27 chances without an error. He showed the same versatility during the 2019 season in Reading, the previous two big league spring training and alternate camps. From our view we think he’s ready to contribute if called to the show.
Matt Vierling - Reading Fightins
Matt posted a .381 batting average and .500 OBP in 26 plate appearances. He led the system in total bases with 16 with 8 hits including 2 doubles and 2 home runs. He also scored 5 runs and had 2 stolen bases. Defensively Matt played center field in five games and right field the other handling 10 chances.
Luis Garcia - Clearwater Threshers
Luis posted a .375 batting average in 29 plate appearances with a .448 OBP. He had 9 hits including a double and a home run. He scored five runs during the week and played stellar defense at both shortstop and second base handling 20 chances and being involved in three double plays. Batting in the two slot in the Clearwater order he will be key to the offensive success of the team, he’s off to a great start !
Christopher Sanchez - Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs
The hard throwing left hander appeared in two games during the week, relieving in the season opener and starting game five. He pitched six shutout innings allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out five batters. Christopher was called to the show the week prior to the season but did not make a game appearance. If he continues to perform at Lehigh Valley like he did the first week of the season it might not be long before he returns to the show.
Victor Vargas - Clearwater Threshers
Victor had a very strong outing on 5/6 going four shutout innings allowing three hits and no walks. He struck out five batters throwing 55 pitches - 38 strikes. Using a four pitch mix to keep the Lakeland Flying Tigers at bay he was part of the 5-0 combined shutout with four other pitchers.
Here’s looking forward to another good week of play.
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
